       > The year is 2035> ext-zones is still open in Wayland protocols. > There exists 5 different plugins with different incompatible versions of the protocol> Apps and toolkits just deal with the mess and partially implement support because they desperately need to be able to position windows> Window positioning is now a standard feature that web apps rely on> "I guess it's time to re-open ext-zones in Wayland and standardize it"> There are now 6 incompatible versions

We are probably about a year or so away from Wayland protocols losing complete control of ext-zones and app developers implementing it through plugins and outside of the Wayland discussion space. When that happens good luck trying to fix the mess that it's going to create.

@technobaboo There's already a KDE plugin in the Fedora repos, there's some use of it in the automotive space, if that push can be done to bring it into qt then there's not much than can be done to stop it

@BrodieOnLinux let's just hope they never make an app crash without it, idk if I can fit it into stardust

@technobaboo I am hopeful for the protocol but it side stepping any discussion could cause some big problems.

@BrodieOnLinux@technobaboo but qt is listed as one of the required (2 client + 1 server) implementations for ext-zones to get merged...

@BrodieOnLinux Idk that much about Wayland but why do they have so much trouble with window positioning? At least in my mind that seems like a pretty simple interface

@mage_of_dragons There's about 3 hours worth of reading to get you up to speed on that, the TLDR is Wayland wants to be able to support more than just desktop compositors so creating a system that makes sense in VR is very hard, there's some security concerns with allowing windows to choose where they can place themselves, and there's also a handful of people in Wayland who just want to do something that is not X11 or Windows but that's a minority
