@judgedread AI doesn't have to be as good as me and certainly not better than me to replace me. It just has to be "good enough." Maybe I take a lot of pride in the things I do, and I work to make them exemplary and perfect and go beyond what is necessary ... and maybe that IS a benefit to those who deal with my work. HOWEVER, they'd survive without all those extra touches, and with an AI that performed the same function at even 50% of my level. And it would be cheaper.See, people think AI has to be as good as or better to replace a person, and that's not true.For decades we have run major government departments with barely trainable affirmative action hires, and simply used "procedures." Procedures have the downside of suppressing the best that people can do, but they also eliminate the worst that people can do. And basically, corporations are more sensitive to risk than they are to missed opportunity. So we have LONG had a system that has primarily focused on "good enough."A complex managerial system is not interested in innovation or extra miles. It is interested in cogs that all work predictably because any unpredictability in the system -- which could include accidentally hiring a genius -- could gum up the whole works. That's why it is so important to collapse ideas like race and sex and so forth -- all just interchangeable cogs. And by the time you "procedure" everything to the point that you can't tell the difference in output between someone with an IQ of 85 and someone with an IQ of 115 -- because everything is always "good enough" -- well guess what? That job can and will be replaced. Even a lower performing AI is superior because it never has a sexual harassment claim, never calls out sick, etc.Most doctors that accept Medicaid or work for one of the mega-hospital corporations could be replaced with an AI, even though medicine is a highly advanced field. Because the doctors work under artificial constraints of 15 minute appointments and never have time to really apply themselves to anything complex. About half of lawyers are midwits anyway, and even as it is they rely on software to kick out a lot of their materials, depending on their specialty. It's already a thing where people get all sorts of forms and filings and paperwork online from a big computer. And even lawyers who wander into courtrooms, I'd say about half of them could be beneficially replaced with a LLM. Ditto for many judges.A lot of things people think are insusceptible to automation are far more easily automated than they realize because perfection is not required. Just "good enough."

Early childhood may be safe for a bit with its heavier emphasis on behavior and socialization, but education in specific subjects can will be done by up and coming AI.I'm using gpt 5 to seriously learn a subject and it's as good as my best professor ever was.Not a single teacher I've tried to discuss this with believes me.

@judgedread @JohnYoungE The issue I see with AI worker replacements is what to do with the masses. UBI is always the answer however the wealthy class are quite adept at tax avoidance and have a burning hatred for the underclasses particular if European. If presented with "make kill bots and sort the problem out" vs "pay them out of my own pocket to not riot" I wonder if payment would happen and would it only happen long enough to build enough kill bots.

@petra @judgedread The median IQ of someone who graduated college with a degree in "Education" is 105. That means half of them are dumber than that. When the state of MA had the idea of testing graduates of their teaching colleges, 50% of them couldn't read at a 10th grade level. That is graduates with 4 year degrees in education. Anyone who graduates public schools with any capacity did so in spite of the schools, not because of them. IF the goal were education, they could certainly be replaced. But education is not their purpose.

Euroslaves have a much, much harder time homeschooling than we do.
