Have you ever seen a horse CT scan before?Joe Juice, a 19 year old gelded (neutered) horse arrived at UC Davis Animal Hospital for a large bump growing on the right side of his cheek.Four years prior, Juice came to the teaching hospital with a similar issue, and it turned out to be a sialothiasis. This is a condition where calcium begins to build up over a foreign object that found its way in a salivary duct, like a piece of grass or something. It starts small, but the calcium builds over time, creating large, visible bumps. If left untreated, these hard calcium deposits will push against the skin and cause discomfort, the horse may try to scratch it to the point of rash or bleeding. The hard build up will also push against the insides of the cheek and cause inflammation, infection, and interfere with their ability to eat. If the stone alters saliva production, it can also affect digestion.Because horse surgery is not something you generally want to do willy nilly, they decided to get a CT scan to make sure this was another sialothiasis. CT scan did confirm the diagnosis, and it was promptly removed.

@Tepid_Tapir I'm always curious how we get animals to sit still for a CT scan.

@badneighbor This guy is lightly sedated - lightly is required so it can still safely stand without injuring itself. You definitely couldn't do this with a feral or completely untrained horse!A lot of the smaller 'exotic' animals are heavily sedated. Sometimes they don't have to be sedated at all with creative restraint techniques. Cats and dogs are done on a case by case basis.Pic rel is a corn snake getting CT scan, no sedation used. They used like a small hollow foam thing and taped it up.
