AZ is cool and water rich, what a perfect place to build huge data centers... that could go anywhere in t he world. I guess they have that solar power? Not even getting into the question of IF this is what we should be building, what about the WHERE?

@futurebird I've had similar concerns about the opening of the TSMC chip fab in Phoenix. I just don't get it. Even if land and solar power might be cheap, all the people working there surely must enjoy drinking water and occasionally bathing, right?

@futurebird The other ugly issue is the number of foreign-owned hydroponic farm facilities that have been quietly sucking the water table dry in that region for decades. I found out about them when looking into possibly picking up a few cheap acres out there to start a homestead. You don't realize how bad it is until you go to drill a well ...Alfalfa sprouts, micro greens, that kinda stuff is what's drying them out even more.

@DaveMWilburn The lack of regulations and taxes, and the ability to manipulate the local government matter much more than long term efficiency. Ants would NEVER. AWN. That is my new reaction to so many things like this that just are not logical or efficient even if you accept the premise of their existence. All that air conditioning. I don't get it.

@futurebird I'm not sure, but I think water is only used for cooling because it's so cheap. If there's enough solar power available, then cooling could be done with just compressor cycle aircon.

@futurebird IF reasonable people were in control of stuff like that, i think it wouldn't even be a bad place. (With My very limited geography knowledge) i think there is very good solar and wind power possibilities, right? So you could actually do a good green datacenter. IF you were inclined to invest the money and development to make it green.

@futurebird I was wondering about this myself. I assume the land is cheap, but the other costs will be higher and it really seems like this works out to a net negative even assuming everything else is somehow positive.
