I've been having a few surreal conversations about AI with one or two people I know who may be less pessimistic about the tech than I am. In both cases we are not talking about investor types, these are artists. And they'll say something like "Now I can shoot that period drama I wrote and didn't have the budget for!"And I want this to be true for them. (In this case I've read the script and it's very good and I would like to watch it.)1/

But, I will say something like "have you tried to get it to do any moment from the script?"And this is when they say "yeah, it was hard it couldn't get the faces right..." etc. Because that's where this stuff fails. But then they say "soon it will be better"It's been three years. But also, I don't know what we are arguing about? I guess if it did work ... great. But it doesn't. Maybe they just want me to share the sense of ... hope? It's hard. This has been such a massive mess. 2/2

@futurebird it's like nuclear fusion for the energy sector... soon! soon, they say, in 5 years at most!

@futurebird I feel like if it did get better, studios would find a way to prevent things from being made by individuals. It would not be affordable.

@futurebird something this has made me become very skeptical of is the idea that the technology to do a particular thing is an inevitability

@mawhrin Both of these people are artists, so it's very easy to get them to see the flaws. They have exacting outrageous standards for their work. But they still somehow have moments where they buy in "this tech can do it for me"no it can't!you are too powerful and good for that to be true!

@futurebird I think there is enormous potential for helping historical #fiction authors write characters with an appropriate tone (a common piece of advice is reading letters and speeches of the period, rather than books about the period), and also referencing contemporary events that all characters would likely be aware of, to really immerse readers. #LLM #AI can be fed lore-books (as they're referred to in UI like #SillyTavern) with actual facts, for "real world" world building.

@futurebird they want to use the stolen artistic labor of millions of pieces of art created by real people like themselves without compensation or even attribution to prop up their own art? If they don't know how these LLMs are built, they should be educated. If they do know and are still enthusiastic about using them for their own gain, then they need to think about why they find it okay. Those things were fed every bit of publicly available art, music, literature, video, and photograph their crawlers could find ignoring copyrights, trademarks, and any other existing legal agreements or understanding. These companies went out of their way to violate every trust and bypass every filter to steal as much creative content as they could find. Using their tools justifies their theft. They hate human creativity so much they want to eliminate it and replace it with a regurgitation engine. They hate it so much they want to control it completely. You can finally produce that script because the tools are "free". Free to you because someone else paid the price.

@futurebird I think they will continue to be disappointed. LLM generated anything is, at best, "good enough". The more specific your need, the less likely an AI is to meet it.LLMs don't understand anything, they have no underlying model of the world. So they make crazy mistakes that no human would make while creating things that look superficially correct.

@Tallish_Tom "The more specific your need, the less likely an AI is to meet it."This exactly.

@futurebird And, in general, artists are very specific and demanding 🙂.
