@Terry air assaulting a hot LZ was always a terrible idea. Ia Drang valley proved that from the beginningbut it doesn't make air mobile a bad idea. being able to hop troops around your own rear or into uncontested territory is a great capability, though it doesn't require helicopters (bring back bigass rough field biplanes)airborne has been a bad idea since the first SAM came online in 1952

@Terry Seems like both sides are using small, dispersed groupings to avoid high drone casualties, with the downside being “soft” defenses that are easily infiltrated by other small, dispersed groups. 🤔

@Terry Aside from a handful of successes I don't know how the paratrooper myth survived WWII. Seems like most of their engagements outside the famous ones consisted of 10-20% reaching the proper target, then being dashed against the rocks of the enemy before retreating with 90% casualties. "This time around we'll get it right" Sure, uh huh. I think everyone just like the romance of cool jump wings and a cadre of "elites", knee joints be damned.

I really wonder about this Ukrainian operation. A number of things make no sense.- Why did they decide to insert dem speshul operators into a hot zone with a helo?- How did the helo even make it there without getting shot down?- How come no drone hit it while it was dropping off the guys?- Wtf did these people thought was going to happen? Arrive in an extremely high profile, very visible manner and not hunted down?- What can be so valuable there worth throwing these guys' lives away?

@WashedOutGundamPilot @Terry In WW2 they just threw a ton of paratroopers at the problem and hoped that some would survive and fulfill their objective. A special forces drop would only really work if they don't have the tech to track whatever aircraft they are using and/or they aren't expecting any hostiles, but it's an active war zone so of course they are expecting hostiles.

@Largo @deprecated_ii if the enemy has no air defenses you can just have them sent in by chopper.I suppose theres a niche scenario where the enemy has no SAMs, no radars, but has tons of sophisticated MANPADs so the only alternative is a high altitude jump from a cargo plane.I can't conceive of any country where that might be the case right now.

@Terry @deprecated_ii Well without radar, if you attack during the night and with the element of surprise those MANPADs should be useless.Besides airborne assaults are impractical after a certain scale, they should be kept to no more than a brigade size at most, anything more and you would be ahead to just make a conventional offensive.

@Largo @Terry static line airborne should just be the rangers and that's it. we don't need a whole corps dedicated to the conceptif we're attacking someone who is vulnerable to airborne, airborne is still a bad choice. supply lines don't appear out of thin air just because the enemy doesn't have SAMs. at least air cav/mobile/whatever comes with attached aircraft that can supply or extract the troops on the ground if they can't link up with other ground forces in a few days
