@aliceamour “Despite the shame and the horror of it....” What the comic does not mention is that these bobbies are not just worried about the moral contagion they might bring home. "Tribadism" in the 18th c. didn't refer primarily to "scissoring" as it does now, but to a woman with a clitoris enlarged to the point she can have penetrative sex.

@aliceamour It was a good question. I was incredulous when I first heard it, too. Apparently the belief about lesbians having enlarged clits for penetration goes back to the ancient Greeks and Romans and probably further.

@aliceamour That's as good an explanation as any, though I've also read that the surviving documents from ancient lesbians show the same phallocentric mindset. Personally, I like to think it was an intentional omission as a useful fiction: _“What!? Me a Lesbian? No, no, no. Look at my clit, it is much too tiny for that!”_
