Can someone remind me why no national leaders (so far as I know) are clamouring for a global, independent tax authority to rein in exploitative global corporations?

@leighelse but, really, who cares what the US thinks now? I mean, what have nearly all countries got to lose? They're already routing around them thanks to tariffs, right?

@leighelse to lay the groundwork, I'd love to see some parties in Aotearoa explaining the lack of positive effects/anti-sovereign implications of 'free' trade agreements like the CPTPPA and campaigning on discontinuing our involvement in them as they're of less-than-zero benefit to NZers...

@lightweight I don't disagree. But the conventional thinking of governments such as ours is that the current situation in the USA is temporary, and that America is still the economic and military leader of the free world, worthy of our full trust and support. That's the first obstacle to overcome.

@lightweight The question answers itself - these are the same organisations (and their leaders) who flout any ethical consideration of paying their share in a local jurisdiction. It is easier for politicians to bask in the reflected-glory of 'inward investment' than it is for 'the average bloke' to realise how much is the outflow during the following years.Organisations attempting this feat (in increasing order of efficacy), UN, OECD, EU. None expect to achieve in the short-medium term!

@lightweight You (personally) may have experienced the lack of reciprocal Tax Agreements when applied to individual income. The list of countries most reluctant to negotiate and offer such, probably aligns closely with those depending upon multi-nationals for their political-funding.(contrarily, try to open a bank account, without feeling a suspicion that they expect you to have 'money-laundering' intent)A discussion (40+ pp) at https://oxfordtax.web.ox.ac.uk/files/tpiage-3-current-regimepdf
