A California woman on trial for taking 4 #chickens from one of #PerdueFarms’ major #PoultryPlants has put animal treatment at #SlaughterHouses in the national spotlight as her defense argues she rescued the birds from #abuse.Closing statements are scheduled for Tuesday in a case that could land Zoe Rosenberg, 23, in prison for >5 years. During the 7-week trial, her defense hasn’t focused on if she took the chickens…but rather the justification for doing so. #law https://apnews.com/article/california-animal-rights-activist-trial-0892823f09951382b1e72a6a578bc68a

“This is not a whodunit. This is a why-dunit,” said Kevin Little, one of Rosenberg’s lawyers, during his opening statement. He said Rosenberg, who has been charged with 3 misdemeanors & felony conspiracy, investigated the plant for 2 months before taking the birds & consulted a veterinarian who was concerned about images that appeared to show animals being boiled alive. Chris Carraway, her other atty, said in a statement that this “was a rescue, not a crime.”#law #AnimalCruelty #FactoryFarms

Rosenberg is an #AnimalRights activist with the group Direct Action Everywhere, or #DxE, which is known for animal rescues & #protests that often garner national attention. #PerdueFarms is one of the largest poultry producers in the country & supplies major grocery chains….#law #AnimalCruelty #FactoryFarms #AnimalWelfare

@Nonilex I suspect that she doesn't stand a chance. This is happening in Sonoma County, where I live. The big industry here is agriculture; wine, mostly, and lately cannabis, but basically when the ag industry says jump, everyone else in the county says "how high?" The ag industry strongly dislikes Ms. Rosenberg. Maybe her lawyers managed to keep people who felt that way off the jury, but that's pretty tough around here.If I were doing her appeal, one thing I'd focus on is the judge's refusal to instruct on the necessity defense. The usual example of that is that if you run into a burning building and carry a baby out, that's technically kidnapping but you can defend by saying that you had to do it to save the kid's life. It seems to me that that's at least arguably available here, and it should have been up to the jury, not the judge, to decide whether it applied.
