I don't understand why Thailand (and many other countries) is allowed to protect their culture but countries like the UK and Canada aren't. https://youtu.be/PVAjaWO9CyYIt may appear that Canada doesn't have a culture to outsiders but I can tell you it's very disturbing knowing WHO exactly will take over the 'culture' in this country when the original European Canadians finish dying out. Sorry if that sounds XENOPHOBIC!

@LaylaAlexandrovna Because white is bad and white people have no culture. Well. Those of us in the USA and Canada and I’m guessing Australia, too as we are “melting pot” countries to one extent or another it seems. Now I sound like a white extremist nut. But really, I’m not. If we lived in a live and let live world then it would be fine. My great grandparents emigrated to the USA and while their kids learned the mother language (Finnish) as that’s what was spoken in the home, my mom and her siblings did not even though my grandparents would speak it to each other. Back then it was so important to fit in with American culture. Nowadays, people will be living here 20, 30+ years and STILL know very little English. Idk how you can function in a society like that when you can’t even communicate with people outside your home or small community in many cases. I mean, if I moved to Canada, I SWEAR ID LEARN THE LANGUAGE! 😂 (I wouldn’t go to Quebec tho.)

@ChasingWaterfalls @LaylaAlexandrovna We have pretty localized ‘culture’ in the US imo that’s heavily influenced by the immigrants who have settled in those areas. But yeah I see the arguments about the US and white people in particular, having no culture at all and I’ve started to see people apply it to European countries as well. It’s true we don’t have the deep roots that many other countries have but that doesn’t mean there’s zero culture. But you’re right about immigrants trying to be absorbed into the dominant white culture in the area they’re in. My dad’s first language was Polish, but he insisted we not be taught and my grandparents largely abandoned the Polish diaspora community in Chicago because they wanted to blend in so badly.

@astarsscreams @ChasingWaterfalls Much the same in my fam. It was intended that their religion be passed along but not the German and Dutch-German they grew up with. Sure "westerners" may not have colourful or extreme practices in our national behaviours, but that's OUR CULTURE. Fed up with people trying to change it for the worse. Fed up with being expected to include the culture of others while my own was wiped out - even though I don't much care about it as we weren't explicitly taught to 'keep the culture' it was implied in everything the ancestors did. Then I don't know exactly what happened. I do remember ages ago in Thailand (early 90's?) and being pestered by I believe it was a Swiss woman tourist who was all bent out of shape because North Americans talk about 'our culture' but we don't even have a 'national costume'. FFSAfter that I didn't give a shit about 'culture' at all. How ridiculous to reduce it to a national song and outfit.

@LaylaAlexandrovna @ChasingWaterfalls Culture isn’t limited to specific trappings like national costume. It’s foods, poems, tradition, songs… I’ve enjoyed discovering the regional costumes of Poland because I know which villages my family is from, but they don’t mean anything to me besides being pretty. It can be really frustrating and I do think a lot of North Americans look for ancestry in part because everyone tells us we don’t have any culture. I know I occasionally post about Midwest and Chicagoland things here and to me, those jello salads are part of my culture. It’s part of our localized food, just like Chicago area specialities from our own immigrant history (like Malort). I also know from interacting with a lot of Canadians here that you guys have very different practices and culture than we do in the US.
