       @Nonilex It must have been in the 70s debates over the death penalty that someone looked at historical data to assess how effective the death penalty was as a deterrent. (I think New York State data,  back at least to the 30s.)Not only was there no evidence of a deterrent effect,  murder rates spiked in the aftermath of an execution.
