Imagine going through a change later in your life that makes you seek an environment that would be toxic to the living things you were surrounded with for most of your life. Salmon hit some point and seek fresh water.American Eels hit a point and seek salt water. I wonder if it's uncomfortable. They do adapt ye...notably both go deep into the hostile realm, lay eggs and then die. Like having the urge to go to IDK high altitude or a gas filled cave for us.

@AlsoPaisleyCat Everyone is impressed with the swimming up little waterfalls... but the water is also kind of toxic. It's wild!

@KanaMauna "This used to nourish me... but now? It's killing me."Sometimes we can't ever really go home. You can't swim in the same river twice I suppose. š

@futurebird donāt forget that salmon start life in fresh water. Maybe the young salmon follow the eels out, thinking they are cool.

@futurebird Fresh water is toxic to salmon. They start disintegrating as soon as they hit it, are barely alive by the time they spawn. I cleaned fish in Alaska for many years, and the difference between troll (salt water) and net (brackish or fresh water) is obvious. Interesting that the fry move into salt water at some point and become very robust.

@bright_helpings From the way the people Iāve observed ātransitioningā react it is more like they are going at long last to the right sort of water to thrive.
