When President Kennedy declared the space race, vs the Russians. He was just following corporate orders. The real reason for the US space program was just two things. It gave the rocket makers something else to do, after finish building 100s of ICBMs.In fact the first manned missions used modified ICBM (Redstone & Titan) rockets. The 2nd reason was as cover to use space to spy on Russia. Camera loaded rockets were passed off as animal testing.Later, satellites replaced the U2 spy plane.

@Logan_5 dunno, man. That doesn't really add up to me. I mean, military launches weren't really a secret because you can't exactly hide launches and orbiting satellites and satellites never replaced surveillance aircraft. We use them till this day because you'll always get better imaging from two kilometers up than from 1600+ km up.

@Logan_5 I mean, think about. The Hubble telescope could theoretically resolve roughly 0.3m on the Earth's surface. This is just physics. Diffraction limit, ya know. And this is 4.2m diameter mirror.

@ThatCrazyDude See the following:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CORONA_(satellite)Especially under the Program History "Discoverer" , "KH1", and "Later KH series. It's admitted that mice and monkeys were used and lost, as test subjects to fake orbital research of space radiation.Cameras went up in place of animals, secretly. We were told it was all animal testing.Animal deaths happened because their life-support wasn't a priority to perfect. Only the spy camera were. And payload recoveries failed, a lot.
