Has anyone ever combined something like Wikipedia with something like McMaster-Carr? A community-edited catalog and taxonomy of materials and parts?

@avi The three best web interfaces for large to huge inventories in my experience is:McMaster-CarrDigikeyRockAutoEach deals with different sorts of stuff, all do an excellent job. McM is by far the prettiest; and most like "print", and yeah, I'd go so far as to say, maybe the best on the internet. And it's fast! And cross-ref! I can't think of any flaws; I know I've had minor frustrations here and there, mostly looking for a component I don't know the right name for. But you can play adventure with and and find pretty much anything they have.Digikey has the best parametric search! Holy crap. A friend of mine who does lots of cutting edge board design occasionally finds errors. He reports them and they work with him to fix the bugs within a day!!!RockAuto is a liquidator of auto parts; they *are* a database, they don't sell directly very many parts (I'm guessing, 1% of what they list; and of that, really common crap). RockAuto has an AMAZING cross-reference; heirarchically find make/year/model/engine/part category, fine your part, FRAMMISTAN. Part FRAMMISTAN has links that show (all?) other make/year/model/engine that uses FRAMMISTAN! Frim there amazing research can be done. The problems I've solved with it are invaluable.(I tried to download all of RA but got caught each time; I don't know where they got that data, combined from thousands of sources. I tried sneaky slow scripts and all, got and blocked me each time.)RA will go away; they're liquidating the tailings of thousands of garages and warehouses ("one widget in Ohio; seven in Maine; one in CA") and as a part becomes unavailable, so does the data on that part.

@tomjennings @avi @greg Digikey’s website and parametric search is excellent. I try and give Mouser a run too just to encourage competition in the space but I keep getting drawn back to Digikey - finding parts that meet my requirements is easier and faster.
