is there an easy way to turn a 3d printer into a cheap plotter? like, I tape a marker to the print head, and some program takes in an SVG and outputs the gcode to move around the print head so that it'll plot what I gave it?

@foone Pull the filament. Tape the marker. Set a z-hop so that the head moves up when the head is not "extruding". Make your shapefile one layer high, no raft, no brim.

@foone For all your plotter questions ask @paulrickards

and I'm asking "is there already a tool to do this". I know I could build something, but my interest level in this idea is "it'd be neat, as long as I don't have to write fucking g-code"

I know I could hack it together, I want to know if there's a mature enough solution for this anyway that I've got a good chance of just dropping in some kind of image file and getting out gcode that has a chance of working

not being able to stand for more than 10 minutes and having a 3d printer in another room doesn't make hacking this together sound fun, so I don't really want to build it myself. But if there's something existing I can drop in for a couple plots, that'd be perfect

@foone If you do a YT search for "3d printer plotter" you'll get plenty of examples. In many (most?) cases, you need to 3d print an adapter to hold a pen but many of those models are already designed; you just need to download and print them.https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=3d+printer+plotter

@foone tangent.I bought a few surplus 3dprinters to cobble together 2 working units and a laser. That machine is as simpler as taping a pen to the laser. It claims you could swap back & forth between Laser and 3d Printhead, but in practice its too much work and is better permanently mounted instead of hastily reassembled.https://store.creality.com/products/creality-laser-module?variant=51732408598893But yes using SVG it is pretty simple to move the tool head around.Tested lasergrbl, Lightburn won. Used sharpie for layout/testing.TLDR: Yes

@foone it’s easier to find mods for laser engravers to do pen plotting. But you generally need to 3D print a pen holder for it 🤷🏻♀️

@foone @gloriouscow you want to plot 3 different characters.Create 3 objects, 1 layer high.Put them in the slicerSay the slicer should print them one after the otherThis forces to lift the head between objectsMake gcodeyou have a plotter! 🤣
