       @xkcd When I took a geology course in 1978 the professor was excited to discuss plate teutonics. He said prior to the theory of plate teutonics very few people accepted the concept of continental drift.But plate teutonics was revolutionary and was quickly accepted. Profs were rewriting their yellowed teaching notes. Plate teutonics provided a mechanism that explained continental drift. Prior to it geologists couldn't see a way drift could hapopen.
