Yesterday, my sugar tested at 139, an hour after a snack with actual sugar in it. (Greek yogurt.) Today, after exercising first thing, and then waiting 2 more hours, for a total fasting time of 12 hours, it still tested at 137. I don't understand how this works. It's like it's just unrelated to what I do. It goes high and stays high, or it goes low and stays low, and I can go several days in a row where it seems to be about the same no matter what I do.

@hosford42 As far as I know, yogurt has a low glycemic index, so it's not supposed to contribute to increase your blood sugar. And for the exercise, I've read that adrenaline can raise your blood sugar.

@hadon I figured the sugar in the yogurt makes a big difference. Probably plain yogurt is just fine, but this was sweetened.I didn't know that about exercise. My assumption was that burning calories meant removing them from my system. But I just did some quick research, and you're right, exercise can raise blood sugar, especially in diabetic people, for up to an hour afterwards!

@hadon I guess I just need to throw out *all* intuition and start from basic principles on this. The fact that we are talking about a dynamic control system that is malfunctioning means simple, intuitive reasoning will rarely come to the right conclusions.

@hosford42@techhub.social @hadon I think it is more than that. You do not cause diabetes or diabetes-like symptoms by eating in a certain way for a month or two, let alone a day. It takes time for the lifestyle changes to have a noticeable effect because it is a complex system with inertia. Many conditions are easier to understand because the effect of changes are felt in a matter of hours, at least gradually. For those it is easier to use instinct and experimentation. For others, you need bigger scale tests with many people, blind tests, control groups, the whole thing. And as an individual your best bet is to take advantage of studying the most you can out of existing literature, books, documentaries, and then doing experiments on yourself but with longer lasting changes, at least months-long for each big change.

I don't know how to make sense of this. I need to be able to steer this thing, but there seems to be no connection between inputs and outputs.

Imagine driving a car, but the effect of the steering wheel changes constantly and the windshield is opaque. You find out if you got there when you step out of the car at the end of the trip. Then you're supposed to learn from this experience how to do it better next time.

@fiery So patience... I'm only a month in. I'm just used to having better steering when I try to problem solve.

@hosford42@techhub.social I mean, how many accumulated centuries of total experimentation on people do we have by now, if you sum up all the studies done on the topic and related subjects? Attacking problems from first principles can be good, but there is no reason you shouldn't leverage all accumulated knowledge at this point. Your life is likely not long enough to outcompete that knowledge if you will start from first principles only.
