There's an important fandom anti-conspiracy reminder of "with very few exceptions, nothing is made bad on purpose" but sometimes mainstream websites make me wonder

I had the misfortune to use a public dropbox folder today, and good lord.

with 1920 horizontal pixels of space to luxuriously spread out list elements in, they allocated a mere 111 of them to filenames.that's 12 letters. That's only one more letter than you could fit in a filename in MS-DOS, an operating system from 44 years ago

best I can guess is that they wrote this interface for phones and don't give a shit that it works like ass on a desktop

the conspiracy version is that it works like ass because they want you to their mobile app, not their website.

but yeah. I think it's just them not caring about the web version. it makes more sense for them business-wise to have cheaper development (due to sharing the desktop HTML and mobile HTML (possibly mobile in-app too) codebases) than to have the desktop HTML be higher quality

it's just extra galling because "listing files" is one of the most solved of computer problems.basically from the moment we had filesystem we were listing them, and usually competently.to get it this wrong in the year of our gourd 2025... it's sad.

I've gotta write some code to list files for one of my keyboards, and I've only got 128 horizontal pixels to work with. I'm confident I'll be able to do better than this Dropbox mess

@fooneSame number as the NC100 supported (it treated DOS 8x3 filenames as 12 characters including the dot, but also somehow supported other characters at position 9, just wouldn't write them to FAT devices. Bear in mind, it did all this on a Z80 CPU in circa 1992...)

@foone Oh God, I hated this one. There’s nothing more frustrating than have to put together a text cover sheet to explain what all the arcane file names mean and you have scores of files.

@foone That's 16 characters in IBM PC text mode, you'll be fine.

@foone I would like to think that responsive design is also a solved (ish) problem, but apparently not 😂

@diazona that's the thing: it's a very responsive layout! in icons mode, it changes how many are shown based on the width beautifully, and in list mode it changes the widths of the columns dynamically as you resize.they just put on a max width on it that's amazingly small, and their (clearly deliberate, based on how it favors some columns over others!) choices of of column widths

@foone as someone whose entire career is building websites, web is a complex platform. I want to share my biggest gripe.I’m not talking about the usual complaints:- Widest possible range of client screens, cpu, memory, browsers- Widest possible range of clients from bots to people to various combinations- The APIs are like Windows and iOS layered on top of Markdown
