https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/jul/16/wealth-redistribution-is-good-for-growth*Wealth redistribution is good for growth.* But even if that were not so, it would be a moral imperative. When you look at the amount economic activity that goes to further enrich the rich, it is clear that we could make do with less GNP if the non-rich are better off as a result.

@rms I once quoted IMF Irma Adleman in a small town newspaper forum, something to the effect that "economic development is only effective when widely shared"and the New McCarthyites went crazy about this "Socialist" hero of mine. This isn't socialism: it is a strategy to prevent the demise of capitalism. Though yes, I prefer Socialism. The willful ignorance and incessant furor of fascists is why we have fewer discussion forums. They will destroy them if you are allowed to speak.

@rms It is a central tenet of the work by Richard Wilkinson and, later, by his collaborator Kate Pickett, that large wealth disparities hurt not just the poor in a society but also, possibly counter-intuitively, the wealthy as well. More egalitarian societies benefit everyone.
