Tree / mushroom species charts of unknown providence for my future reference.I'll be cutting some pole timbers in a month or two and plan to inoculate those that I can.

@eriner if you have some oak stumps, or even live oaks that you don't particularly like and you can score chicken of the woods spores, definitely go for that. They stink like a motherfucker when you cook them, so it's best done outside, but it's well worth it. Literally taste like chicken 😉https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laetiporus_sulphureus

@ThatCrazyDude @eriner I love the colour of chicken of the woods. Found some several years ago that was neon pink. Kinda rubbery texture, but tasty.

@toiletpaper @eriner yeah, definitely. The only downside is that you have to boil them for quite some time before all the sulphur boils off. Not an issue if you have a crockpot that you can leave in the backyard for a few hours, of course.Oh and if you cook them for long enough they get much softer and kinda fibrous, sort of like chicken meat ;)

@ThatCrazyDude @eriner I never did that. I just sliced them and fried in a pan with some butter and garlic. Probably why they were so chewy. Didn't notice the sulphur taste, so maybe I got lucky.

@toiletpaper @eriner then it definitely wasn't the chicken of the woods. You'd know if it was. Heck, your whole family would know. Unless you're somehow desensitized to hydrogen sulfide, aka the sewer gaz ;)

@ThatCrazyDude @eriner Hmmm. I'm pretty certain it was. Mind you it was quite a while ago, so my memory isn't totally fresh. It's not one I come across too often. I definitely don't remember any sulphur taste, just that it was a bit rubbery. That said, I might have steamed it first and just forgot. *shrug* But I'll definitely keep that in mind the next time I find some. 👍

@toiletpaper @eriner but then, maybe.... 🤔I mean, I was always taught that you have to simmer them in water till they stop stinking, before you start doing anything else with them, and that's how I always processed them. Perhaps they don't outgas that much if you just fry them in butter or whatever 🤔🤔🤔🤔

@ThatCrazyDude @eriner Turns out there're two different varieties, white and yellow. I found the white variety (which is very pink in colour, rather than orange). So it might just come down to that, or host tree, or some other factor like that.https://foragerchef.com/white-chicken-of-the-woods-laetiporus-cincinnatus/

@bonifartius @toiletpaper @eriner yeah, but I don't think it works with the concentration you get out of boiling mushrooms. Those aren't the toxic levels you'd expect while crawling trough sewers, ja know. More like as if you'd leave an egg salad in the fridge overnight and then open the damn thing in the morning. It will smell but not enough to shut down your nose 🤣
