In the Einsteinian system, quantum mechanics deals with atoms and photons (or particles of light) and continuum mechanics deals with fluids, solids, and spacetime. But the Einsteinian system is based on the incorrect assumption that ether does not exist. If you discard this incorrect assumption, then quantum mechanics deals with atoms and ether particles and continuum mechanics deals with fluids, solids, and the substance formed by large quantities of ether particles bound together in such a way that the substance behaves like a solid. This substance can be called simply "ether". After discarding the incorrect assumption that ether does not exist, the spacetime continuum vanishes. There is no need for it, since continuum ether mechanics can explain everything that the Einsteinian system needs spacetime to explain: the anomalous precession of Mercury's perihelion, bending of light rays near the Sun, Shapiro time delay, and the fact that ordinary matter has a terminal velocity of c in a vacuum.Photons also vanish after discarding the assumption that ether doesn't exist. Instead of photons, we have ether particles vibrating extremely rapidly perpendicular to the direction of travel of a light wave. Planck used the idea of an integer number of vibrating ether particles, which he called "vibrators", to derive the correct equation for the electromagnetic spectrum emitted by a "black body". But he too eventually accepted the incorrect assumption that ether does not exist. An incorrect assumption always leads to absurdities. For example, the incorrect assumption that ether doesn't exist leads to the absurdity of a universe that is constantly expanding at every point in space. This absurdity is necessary to explain the cosmological redshift when you assume that ether doesn't exist. On the other hand, if you don't assume that ether doesn't exist, then the decrease in frequency of a light wave as it travels millions of light years through intergalactic space is obviously caused by the ether particles along the path of the light wave slowly losing vibrational energy. Of course, total energy is conserved. The vibrational energy lost by the ether particles along the path of the light wave is gained by the surrounding ether particles outside the path of the wave in the form of lower frequency and lower intensity vibrational energy.Another absurdity that results from the assumption that ether doesn't exist is the idea of a massless particle: the photon. The only reasonable definition of a "particle" is a very small object with mass.An incorrect assumption can also lead to a belief that a thing is impossible when it actually is feasible and important. For example, the assumption that ether doesn't exist leads to the belief that faster-than-light communication is impossible and also the belief that any space propulsion system without mass ejection is impossible. Today we know that ether does exist. Dayton Miller's interferometer experiments and the discovery of neutrinos prove that ether exists. So the assumption that ether does not exist is especially bad today.
