Ok but why do they look like termites? I swear to god "golden age" comic artists have never really looked at an ant. Their legs aren't that bad, though...

@dhobern Mantises, termites and roaches are all in the same family. So that makes sense.

Well I'm going to find a way to read this. These ants better not be a metaphor for COMMUNISM.

@dhobern The summary made it sound more nuanced. Superman takes on the ant traits of his own free will to communicate with them and they have come to earth with "an important message" so... not all hope is lost. It might be fun.

@futurebird @dhobern ah, so it's not just a "Red Kryptonite makes something random and wacky happen to Superman" story?

@futurebird @dhobern Usually, in this era, Red Kryptonite affects Superman in some random, goofy and story-specific way that wears off after a few days. It gives him a bulging super-brain or the head of a lion or alters his personality, and it's always a different effect. I guess in this case he knew this "cloud" had a specific effect he could exploit...

@gloriouscow Insects don't see things split up like that. It's integrated in their mind. But you could talk to the ants at last. (or at least understand what they were going on about... you'd need pheromones to really fully communicate. ) That would be wonderful.

@futurebird Back then, artists came up with a wacky cover that people would buy to figure out what the feck was going on, and then the writer would come up with a story which the cover would fit.

@gloriouscow @futurebirdI feel like the beard is not the most notable thing about ‘Bearded Superman’ and he might have been better called something else.

@futurebird @gloriouscowThat gets me thinking: Does his X-ray vision reflect in a mirror or just see through the mirror? Maybe the mirror needs to be lead-backed instead of silver-backed.

@futurebird I just read it, and it’s classic early Silver Age D.C. comics goofiness. I feel like I've killed some gray cells reading, and I’m afraid writing a summary would damage the brains of anyone who reads it. The one line that is sure to make you furious is where Clark describes ant queens as “tyrannical.”

@futurebird @gloriouscow I need to look up which book in the series it was, but in the Moirin trilogy by Jacqueline Carey being able to hear and understand the language of ants was considered a curse, because it's boring and it. never. stops. anywhere. :)

@gloriouscow @UnlikelyLass Krypto is a MUT. He is an American dog. I really dislike the idea that the poor puppy has let those purebreds get in his head like that.
