I canceled my two streaming services and I have been giving that money away to particular writers and youTube creators. Creepy StoriesInsect and Science ContentInteresting Political CommentaryCrafts and ArtsYour list might be different. I look for anyone with fewer than 100k followers. Ideally under 30K. IMO It would only take maybe 50,000 or so people doing this to have a massive impact on what kind of media is available.

@futurebird As someone who dabbled in the creepy stories realm (and still may one day) I can honestly say that you might just bring someone back from the brink of giving up by doing that.Being reminded that people would be sad if they didn't have your creations anymore is a powerful, powerful thing.Disney gets enough of that. "Consumer Activism" is one of the lest effective kinds of activism. (Though I think one should do everything possible.) But, put your money out there if you can. If you could pay Disney or Amazon why not a person who really makes the stuff you enjoy?If you can. (and if you can't that's not a big deal)

@futurebird Right? Jeff Bezos never noticed when I canceled my prime subscription, but the newsletter writer who I subscribed to for about the same amount of money per year certainly did.

@futurebird Where I really turned a corner on my thinking about consumer activism was when I started thinking about what it would mean to a local or small online shop that I was buying from instead of Amazon. It doesn't mean much to Amazon to lose my business, but it can mean a lot to other places to gain it.

@futurebird I'm kind of a bandcamp fundamentalist for this reason. I know a lot of musicians (from going to local shows a lot) and it apparently pays better than other services, plus it has a mechanism to pay extra if you can, plus on designated Bandcamp Fridays they forgo their cut and it all goes to the musician. And you can often listen before you buy if you're not sure about a recommendation. You can download or stream or both.I don't know, I just really like it.

@futurebird I can't remember the last time I paid for televisionI mean I did just buy a new fire stick cuz I killed the remote after 2 years with bong waterBut I jailbreak that and use one of the streaming apps and can find virtually anything I want to watchWith a huge variety because it's just what is trending on the app at whatever momentIt really is too bad that covid is so ubiquitous because the other thing that is missing is community entertainment rather than just media consumption
