@fox My TrueNas has 256G in it, about a dozen containers running including an ollama AI model, and whatever is left is automatically dedicated to ZFS cache. :)

@ShredderFeeder i dont like to run stuff on truenas since for me its rather jank, i only host stuff on it if it needs large amounts of storage and doesnt work with/support my S3. and i still have engouth ram in my truenas vm for zfs to take which is not taking more.

@fox I don't run VMs in truenas...but an R730 with 12x 20tb drives for my plex/*arr setup, I have an R630 esx server with a half terabyte of DDR4 for VMs, and another R630 single node nutanix with a quarter terabyte, and an R630 HyperV box with a quarter terabyte that also houses a virtual rubric. (6x 5tb drives for backup)And the electricity bill that goes with it. ;-)

@ShredderFeeder im 96gb short of half a terrabyte of ram. The electricity bill is what stops me from running anything more then my main server(i have a entire bladesystem lol). Also can you send a *fetch of your strongest server?

@fox Oh god bladecenters suck up electricity. No I stick with the pizza boxes except for the R730XD which runs truenas, it's a 2U, 12x3.5" bay monster. Even running an NVidia 2070 I had lying around for the Plex Transcoding and AI containers. But by far, my "strongest" system is my workstation. ;-)(Sending because none of the other systems are capable of fastfetch)

@ShredderFeeder only 64gb of ram and swap enabled? Also I dont have a bladecenter, IBM stuff is too fancy for me, I have a half broken hp bladesystem C3000. The only server I have running is my huge 6u ML350G9

@fox Yeah, just reinstalled last week and haven't turned swap off, this is a good reminder. 64G is fine for a workstation/gaming PC. :) Don't see the need to go higher as I don't virtualize anything under it. Jesus that blade is a beast. What do you use the GPUs for? Mining or AI?I may add one more R630 running proxmox just to round out my hypervisor experience. I tried proxmox a while back and was unimpressed with both the interface and the setup.. I have an older R720 (DDR3) with about 120TB of ram sitting on a shelf, maybe I'll dust it off and see if it still boots.

@ShredderFeeder is the 120TB a typo?I dont use the gpus for ai, well i used the k80 for ai but then the ai made it braindead? But the gpu stuff is for vdi. Also my current workstation has 128gb of ram amd winfetch doesnt say it but i have 2 cpus in it.

@fox No, that's my old NAS that I decommed in favor of the new R730 w/ 240TB. ;-)I keep a running resource graph at all times on my case display, It never gets over 50% even when gaming, so I think I'm good.

@fox Shitty OS running on super-expensive proprietary hardware. ;-)I mean, you're running a 2011 processor and DDR3 ram.. The whole thing is kind of an antique actually, I just threw my last two R820's in the dump because I couldn't sell them even at $250 each with a terabyte of ram..

@ShredderFeeder mac os is way worse then windows. Also a TB of ddr3 ram for 250usd sounds like a pretty good deal, sad to see such hardware get tossed away.

@fox That's like saying bear shit is worse dog shit to step in. Both are inherently unpleasant. ;-) It's funny, I was able to rip the ram out of the boxes and sell the ram separately on bay for more than I would have gotten for the servers with the ram in them. I sold 64 32g sticks for $10/each, and it took less than a week to have unloaded all of them.I'm booting the R720 now to put proxmox on it. Do you know if it prefers HBA mode vs Raid mode on the controller?

@ShredderFeeder i would assume HBA since its not 2010 anymore but idrk since I forwarded my HBA to my truenas vm

@fox Looks like if you're using ZFS HBA mode is recomended, hardware raid for anything else. interesting. I have 12x 10TB drives, I'll probably throw them all at it in a raid-10 ish setup for playing with. Not really worried about performance on this one. And the R720 has a GTX1080TI so I can even throw some GPU at it if it supports it. Good learning experience. (I don't see a lot of Proxmox at work, so it's not really been a focus for me)

@fox You should run Linux on it, you'd get a LOT more out of it. Especially with older hardware.

@ShredderFeeder i might be comfortable running linux as a server but as a desktop id rather not. Also i dont think the macpro4,1 motherboard(ik it says i have a macpro5,1 but thats just firmware to make x5690 work) support pcie forwarding. Im also just way mroe comfortable because if the os breaks its usually not my fault on windows.

@fox I've run Linux as my primary workstation for about 10 years now. Made the rounds, from Ubuntu, to Linux Mint, to Bazzite, Nobara, and finally settled on good old Fedora... I love that it's mine, and there is nothing I need to do that I can't do on it, mostly for free.I don't run Nvidia crap either, which makes life easier. (AMD and Linux have always worked wonderfully together.)

@fox Agree to disagree on this, I found myself reinstalling windows about every 6 months when performance went to shit because the registry was all cluttered with crap...6 months is the average amount of time I go between reboots on my Linux Desktop.. ;-)
