Why can the investors simply have the pay package as a bonus dividend?Since they are so flush with cash they can blow it on management in a way that does nothing.

@futurebird @burnitdown Well, if you’ve been reading their defense of it, you would see that they say they need to keep the CEO from getting distracted and not actually working there anymore. By giving him an extra trillion dollars, he will pay attention to the company that he owns 19% of and is the source of his wealth. It is, I assume, standard practice in capitalism to offer to triple the wealth of employees when they are not doing their jobs?

@burnitdown When conservatives first encounter a phrase like “environmental racism” it can break their brains. They have no idea what such a phrase could mean. They assume it means the left has gone mad and thinks trees and air are racist. (of course “environmental racism” is real— “racist urban planning decisions” might be more clear.)I bring this up because— could we be missing something here? Is there some kind of “discourse” context that would make this sound less bonkers?

Normally I’m not so glib about saying I could do the job of someone with more experience— things are often harder than they look. @futurebird @burnitdown Yes, maybe where they think "racism" means individual personal bigotry, so asking them to tackle any kind of systemic disadvantage around race sounds like either calling them and people like them racists, which is *uncivil* and means they get to call you names too, or is just making shit up.There's a certain amount of *wilful* non-understanding in there, and I don't think you can get around that with different terminology.

@futurebird Tesla is a meme stock with a market price artificially inflated by Elon Musk's irrational fan base. He can wreck the company all he wants, but if he goes away, his fans sell and the stock reverts to something more like its fundamental value, which would be a fraction of its valuation even if it were doing well. I think that's it.

@futurebird I'm having trouble finding exact quotes (because words like "Musk" and "shareholders" and "pay" are in almost every issue) but the Money Stuff newsletter by Matt Levine has written a lot about this. I think the idea is1) "Elon Musk is a bold genius who has already taken the stock price of Tesla sky high, beating the very ambitious metrics which were written into his previous contract" and his fanboys believe he can do it again. The extreme pay package is what it takes to motivate Musk at this point - he has too much money already to be motivated by anything less - and Musk is the guy with the magic.2) Anyway, Tesla isn't really a car company. It's an AI company. It's going to be making a ton of money selling self driving cars and running robo taxis any day now, but also it's going to sell robots for factories and as household servants and replace all of us with AI robots in our jobs as well. Tesla, and by extension it's shareholders, will own the infrastructure of the whole world.Now personally, I don't believe either of those propositions. But then, that's why I'm not a Tesla shareholder.
