Hacking is a state of mind, not a skill. Want to cook eggs and all you have is a waffle iron? Time for a kitchen hack.Hackers are just creative people that compulsively test boundaries be they artistic, social, technological, or otherwise.Houdini was a hacker. Edison and Tesla were hackers. The Wright brothers were hackers. Michelangelo was a hacker.Break stupid rules. Be a hacker.

@lrvick Irvick, i am sincere Muslim. You know, there is the concept of user rights in Islam. According to this concept, don't closed-source software violate user rights? In that case, using closed-source software is not permissible.

@tuskun I would go a step further. I feel the entire concept of intellectual property is theft, robbing those of the freedom to be creative and repair or improve anything they wish with their own resources.Similarly I think giving or selling someone hardware or software without also giving them the full source code and the information to maintain and repair is a scam, conning people to be permanently dependent on the scammer. This legalized scamming is profitable, but it is still theft.

@tuskun I can see allowances for things like entertainment. A magician should not be required to reveal his secrets. But tools, those are sacred. To intentionally create and sell a useful tool and intentionally monopolize the information needed to maintain, improve, or repair said tool, is evil.I am very aware evil is the default.

@lrvick My friend why is qubesos non free parts are better than fully free libre trisquel? And in my opinion Matrix is problem protocol. Because there is lots of metadata and less decentralized. Can you help me? Should I use XMPP or Matrix?

@lrvick And also, could you recommend a laptop for me? Should I buy a laptop compatible with trisquel(or parabola etc.)?

@tuskun I personally use and recommend QubesOS. Personally I use a GPD Win Max 2 as I do not ever carry a mobile device, and this device is small enough to put in a small pouch attached to my leg yet powerful enough for me to fully do my job from on the go.Note this is not an officially supported device, so it may take some research to work around minor issues from time to time.

@tuskun I use the GPD Win Max 2, but anything on the QubesOS compatibility list is a safe bet.

@lrvick What do you think about SimpleX?

@tuskun With Federated systems like Matrix I can pick a specific server I trust to not leak my metadata, but with SimpleX I have to trust that most of the network is honest, when any random person can run as many nodes as they want.If SimpleX had node remote attestation so any nodes could be kicked off the network that are unable to prove they are not logging, then it would be a lot more interesting to me.@xyhhx is a SimpleX fan, so maybe they can add defenses for it I am not aware of.

@xyhhx @tuskun Oh you have been defending simplex lately as better than matrix so figured you were a user.Edited pronoun. I can almost never remember peoples names so pronouns are almost impossible to remember. There should be a thing like for emails where it is like "you said the word attachment, did you mean to attach something?"only instead"This user has they/them on their profile, do you want to adjust the pronoun you used for them?"I need autocorrect for misgendering.

@lrvick thanks for correcting it. moshidon does this, kinda. you can see a user's pronouns next to their name if they've set it up in their bioas for simplex, i was only saying its protocol has less metadata leakage than matrix. i still use matrix daily and don't use simplex at all, after all @tuskun

@tuskun xmpp - as a protocol - is quite nice. it has metadata leakage to some extent too, similar to matrix. but the clients are woefully lacking in features and user experience compared to matrixanother interesting thing about matrix is that it's far "more decentralized": rooms don't exist on any server per se, and can never really be deleted@lrvick

@xyhhx @tuskun XMPP is also a very heavy protocol that was designed before portable computers or smartphones were in popular use, so battery life was not a consideration.Matrix heavily optimized their protocol to minimize data and battery consumption taking cues from similar approaches taken by major proprietary alternatives.Frankly XMPP inspired modern alternatives, but I don't see any reason to use XMPP today.

@pj @tuskun @xyhhx The low bandwidth mode will be a nice optimization, and allow for push notifications to be done natively over matrix which will be huge, but I am talking about the current stateXMPP as I understand it always requires a constant active communication with the server which is expensive on mobile, while Matrix can sleep until a push notification, and then sync a whole channel buffer at a time.

@pj @tuskun @xyhhx Bear in mind I have not been a regular XMPP user in 20 years, so by all means correct me if I am wrong.
