I've been studying the chat app SimpleX (I have to keep abreast of these things for work) & was so over focused on the tool I did not see the hand that made it.Thanks to a prompt from @liaizon, I looked into the political leanings of the developer. The author indeed appears to be hardline, highly vocal, conspiratorial extreme right, even so far as drumrolling racist party ReformUK.https://x.com/epoberezkin (trigger warning)So it follows I will not be using or further supporting SimpleX Chat

@liaizon I wish to apologise to any I have recommended SimpleX to in the last few months. I suggested it for those looking for an anonymity-first E2EE chat application. My avoidance of X/Twitter and over focus on implementation had me not doing my due diligence and learning of the developer's broader agenda and political posture. I am disturbed by what I have learned. Yuck.I will do better next time.

@JulianOliver @liaizon So the questions are now:- What would you recommend now for people looking for anonymity-first application, that doesnt require strong selector identifier? (no cyber-ponzi/blockchain allowed!)- Should we sacrifice privacy over an (even profound) disagreement with an author of software?(both are real, open questions.)To me the promise of free/libre software is in part that: i can use your code _even if_ i disagree with you. libre code as a universal middle-ground...

@jz @JulianOliver @liaizon very much agree, both with the concerns and with @jz reply. How is this different from Tor and signal being funded and started with CIA money? Are they any less fascist? Are their ideologies any less embedded in the software? We must be vigilant at all times. In my view, simplex is the best option for secure and private messaging right now, and people are dire need of identity protection *right now*. This system can be made ours, we can run our relays and we can fork.

@zeh @JulianOliver @liaizon and we will NEED a third-party implementation of the protocol (maybe something spartan in TUI) in rust or go....(oh.. and we should stop using stuff developed in go because go is developed by a fascist company, right?... right?......)

@JulianOliver @liaizon How about the code that was funded by Radio Free Asia, who actively curtailed free/libre software, made false secuirty promises, and is spearheaded now by someone who worked for Google? How about the code of an Israeli company whose business was metadata collection (invoicing) for telecom operators? How about the code that was bought and further developed by Meta? And after a while: what is left but your own code?
