@kaia very easy unless your ip address has ever been used for spam then it's nearly impossible: https://mailinabox.email/

@kaia The most honest answer is "Don't".You have to jump through so many hoops and settings to get things right and then your emails might still end up in the spam.It is, however, an interesting learning experience though, so you can always give it a shot.

@p @lain @kaia Depends. I never had problems with Google (or any provider really), but they do weird rating that is completely non-transparent. What caused me more issues is services refusing to send me mail, because some of them do domain whitelisting apparently. But that is also a problem with my main email provider. If you can find a hosting company that is strict enough about who they allow to host email on their IP space, then it's probably gonna work fine.

@kaia i've done it, not as hard as some claim it to be. most arguments i've seen is either "it's too hard to set up and maintain", which 100% depends on what sollution one uses, and they chose the hard to set up and maintain sollution. Or it's delivery problems. In my experience, it can indeed happen that ms/google doesn't show your mail even when everything is set up right, but not always. And delivery does seem to go through when replying to email, and most places have a contact form where the email thread starts from anyhow. So in practice this didn't matter too much for my use case (personal mail, mostly receive, or send to only a small set of people). In the end i did switch to a local coop for hosting my mail bc i can't trust myself to not mess up my server during times where i need my server to be up :3c but that's more of a general self hosting thing rather than email specific.

@kaia there's a ton of automatic all in one setups these days, but deliverability/reputation racketeering is even worse than fediblock because it's a multi billion corporation with no accountability instead of some powertripping dweebowning the domain and keeping an imapsync backup is about the right level of ownership that's not a complete pain
