It's not traditional for Democrats to complain about the deficit. That's a Republican thing. This means the Republicans have a reputation for Fiscal Responsibility. This is supposed to be because Democrats will "tax and spend."But, over the past 12 years this has kind of fallen apart. Republicans have leaned so far into massive tax cuts that we are running a Deficit now as if we'd IDK, done single payer or something. Relative to GDP it's VERY bad. 1/

I really think we need to talk about the the "High Cost of Big Tax Cuts" --I hope that Republican might be pried from power, and do not assume that will be easy or even happen. But even if they are things are bleak when it comes to the deficit. It would be wise to start talking now about how it's "so big" and how we are paying so much interest etc. etc. and make it clear WHY that's happening.A deficit like this is fine if you are spending on the public. We aren't.

@futurebird Republicans have out-spent the Democrats since like Reagan. Republicans have also gaslit America since like Eisenhower. This isn't absolute, but Reagan outspent Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, and after like 4.5 years, Trump has outspent everyone.

@vestige This is true if we count defense. Which not all people do because of other irrational notions. This thing with the low taxes driving the deficit is a little new. And it's mostly tax cuts for the obscenely wealthy. To me it's obvious that this is bad and it seems like it would be easy to get the public on board with not running up a big deficit just so rich people don't have to pay taxes.

@futurebird @vestige Laffer: math is hard.Curve go up, curve go down.Republicans claim tax cuts pay for themselves and the innumerate bow and nod TEAly.

@futurebird I think "We're borrowing money so we can give it to rich people" sums it up well.

@futurebird all spending decisions are political and only about redistribution. These are redistribution to extreme wealth away from poor and middle class people. There's NO particular neutral spending or money creation optimum. That's all political redistribution too. "Affordability" isn't a concept that makes sense as a currency creator.
