So now I'm in Paris after 5 weeks of workation in Spain. Flying was a revolting and humiliating experience as always in our modern world of surveillance. The only interesting thing was a conversation with security. Apparently it was very important to check that I had not hidden a knife in my belt. That must be all the rage with terrorists these days. A knife hidden in your belt. I asked the security guy why they allow me to bring a pen with me, because I could totally stab someone in the eye

with a pen and kill them that way. Naturally security had no answer. Likewise, I could tape a ceramical knife to my leg, and obviously that they did not check for. I got more shrugs. I find it fascinating that some human beings are such mindless robots and just plain stupid. Do they enjoy wasting away their life doing nonsense theater? It seems like such an undignified way to earn a living, and just a waste of someone life. Let us all pray that this guy never realizes how meaningless

his existence is. Or perhaps we should pray that he does? That way, he could actually try and get a productive job and contribute to the world, instead of being a net detractor. For all of you out there... if a highly motivated and intelligent terrorist wants to take down a plane, it will come down. No security theater in the world will change that.

@h4890 because we’re a culture so demoralized, so indoctrinated into worshipping and submitting to authority that we desperately need to see that the people in charge are doing *something*.And that’s why regardless of who you voote for, you’re always getting a bigger State, more debt, more surveillance, more censorship. And nothing can be undone.

@jae True. Generally I am not concerned at all about terrorists attacking me. I've never seen one. I think in general, the population at large lives way too much in fear of everything, and this is naturally engineered by our politicians to get them to relinquish all their power in return for safety. This is the oldest hoax in the book. Look at biblical times, if you believe in me, god will protect you and give you safety. But only if you do as I tell you.Same with todays politicians. Replace god

@h4890 @jae "I think in general, the population at large lives way too much in fear of everything, and this is naturally engineered by our politicians to get them to relinquish all their power in return for safety."More likely: the fearful herd creates its politicians.

@danneskjold_crewman At large, I agree. But I am an optimist at the core, so I do believe that at least individually, it is possible to live a free life. I also think that it should be possible to build up remote communities that are free, with the help of modern technology. Hiding in plain sight, kind of. Real change however, only seems to happen after profound crashes of society or after bloody wars. It seems very rare for real change to happen without drama.

@jae This is the truth! I recommend fishing. ;) Some time in nature, a vague sense of accomplishment if you catch something, and the basis for a great home cooked dinner! I find that it relaxes me like no eastern meditation ever has done. ;)

@h4890 @danneskjold_crewman I have been reading parts of The Republic again for a project I am editing. Plato tells us, intelligently, that mental state corresponds to the type of order we choose in our lives, both personal and civilizational.Very wise, and he has been hiding in plain sight for 2400 years.
