Fediverse platforms don't have to be monolithic. Here's @benjaminbellamy showing off the new plugin architecture for Castopod in a #FediForum demo.https://spectra.video/w/awbTuePpDCvHPxbVzkgykt

@fediforum @benjaminbellamy can podcasts be made to work on AP instead of RSS? then I could boost the episode itself instead of just a post that links to it.

@flame_broiled @wjmaggos @fediforum @benjaminbellamy Yes, you can (make podcasting work on ActivityPub rather than RSS).Also, you can think of ActivityPub outboxes as the new RSS / Atom / WebFeed:https://mastodon.social/@reiver/114070142883326241But, ActivityPub also offered a "push" messaging model, in addition to the "pull" messaging model. Which is nice to have both options (in a practical sense)..

@reiver @flame_broiled @fediforum @benjaminbellamy so we just need some podcasters and podcatchers to implement it?

@wjmaggos @flame_broiled @fediforum @benjaminbellamy More or less, yes. ActivityPub had what is needed to represent a podcast. And, there is some Fediverse podcasting applications, such as Castopod. The issue is really one of user-experience. For example, you need a Fediverse mobile app that presents ActivityPub data as a podcasting experience (rather than, for example, a micro-blogging experience). It is definitely doable.

@wjmaggos @flame_broiled @fediforum @benjaminbellamy A side question —What would you say are your favorite podcasting apps? And, what do you like about them?...Also, are there any podcasting apps that aren't your favorites that have features you like? And, if so, what are those features?

@reiver @flame_broiled @fediforum @benjaminbellamy I haven't used anything but Pocket Casts for quite a while. It does so much well. I love that it has a web app but I don't love that it constantly logs me out there. When I share an episode, it provides a link that runs through Pocket Casts. not great but lots of podcasts don't have their own sites anymore.I think it's FOSS. I wish it was self hostable.
