Actions speak louder than words. Right? It’s true that talk is cheap. But what makes you feel better? When someone does something for you without saying anything, or when someone pays you a compliment? Which makes you feel more loved and appreciated? Silent actions or heartfelt words?

Silent actions. It's worse when one's actions don't match words.

When someone does something nice. Words can be in genuine, but doing something nice takes effort and is more sincere.

True. I’m not saying actions don’t matter. But I think the power of words is underestimated. A simple compliment can change someone’s whole day.

I suppose. But silent actions can lack understood intent. So saying how you feel or why do things is important too. Also just saying something kind brightens someone’s day.

That was kinda my point. I think we downplay how much a compliment affects us. Logically actions mean more. But a kind word has more power than expected.

I’m not talking about using a compliment to get something. I mean if someone holds a door for you without saying anything, you kind of assume they did it because they felt obligated. But if that person holding the door says, “Hey, I like that jacket.“ It has a lot more meaning. I don’t know. Just musings.

@Rose @HockeyDoxie As a man, I appreciate compliments and kind gestures. Compliments are rare because of how men are and the way society views us and our place with a lot of expectations of duty for things without much coming back in way of thanks or acknowledgement.

Gotta be careful WHO you compliment like that these days. When I'm out of my normal "rural element", I ONLY open a door for old ladies. When I moved to DFW, in Dallas in '99, I got some snide comments, "I don't need your help." Realizing there are lots of liberal wymyn in the cities, I just started NOT doing it unless it was an older generation who were raised proper.

I understand. I hold doors for the elderly or mom’s with kids. And I always say thank you when a man holds a door for me.

Just the way I was raised. But I will admit I don’t really like people talking to me randomly in public. I’m not sure why it happens so frequently to me. People love to ask how old I am…

Another thing that really annoys me... it used to be taken for granted when I was a kid that if you were getting on to public transport you'd stand back to let people off first. Even if space was tight and there wasn't room for everyone, people still did it.Nowadays it's a free for all, people just push their way to the front and across people trying to get out.
