I will call "No Kings" a big success. Multiple outlets are reporting on millions of participants. It was bigger than the one in the summer. A lot of people participating in something like this for the first time.It was national and even a little international (Thank you London and Dublin)No one can say the president or his regime has broad popular support or a mandate.

@futurebird bigger than the summer one would be heartening; i hope you’re right. what i’m seeing (anecdotes, not data) from social media posts is high percentages in numerous small towns (often around 10% of a 4-digit population) but major city turnouts that, while 6 digits strong, are less than 1% of the city’s population.

But not the "bite" (which includes direct action beyond the protests and sometimes not public) from that last 1/3 of the further-left-from-liberal under that Leftist umbrella.

@raven667 @futurebird @Npars01 I'm thinking a general strike can be a one-day affair. It should not have to cause trauma to workers. I don't know is it ridiculous to imagine one day a month we shut down the economy?

@Dave_Goldsmith @raven667 @futurebird @Npars01 So our union has had two strikes in the 26 years I have been in it. 2000 and 2022. They were not one day affairs rather open ended 56 days in 2000 and a week in 2022. TO send a message 1 day is fine to effect any change may need to be longer than that but 1 day would still be cool to see As Always "They have the plant but we have the power"

@futurebird But...he still retains power, still owns Congress, the Senate, the Supreme Court. He is openly mocking the protests. It'll be interesting to see if this has any meaningful impact other than showing future history readers that there were people who cared and tried to stand up. Maybe it'll scare other elected politicians who care about holding onto their power and jobs if they thing significant numbers of their base are switching sides?

@raven667 @futurebird @Npars01 Microsoft has patch Tuesdays. Why can't we have No Kings Mondays? The second Monday of every month there's a general strike. People in favor of the strike meet to discuss politics, work on local projects like cleaning and repairing homes, stream cleanup, etc.You may say that I'm a dreamer but I'm not the only one. (I hope.)

@Dave_Goldsmith @raven667 @Npars01 My point with that comment is that people have very different relationships to their jobs and what a "strike" might mean. I don't think this is as generally applicable as it might seem. Maybe for the retail and parts of the private sector it could make sense, but not everyone works there.

@futurebird @cvvhrn @Dave_Goldsmith @raven667 @Npars01 Back in the 1980s we had rolling strikes in teaching. Odd days, mornings and afternoons rather than going out on strike long term eg the crippling miners strike against Thatcher's govt.

@futurebird @Dave_Goldsmith @Npars01 @raven667 We're trying. We've voted the union in. Now we're struggling to get the people in power to actually come to the table instead of spending $$$K to send lawyers, who just say 'no.'

@Godfrey642 @futurebird @Dave_Goldsmith @raven667 @Npars01 From a nursing standpoint, the rolling stuff does not seem to work. We are an independent union but the dominant large nurses union uses the 1 day strikes a lot. For hospitals at least most can cancel electives and hold on for a day but open ended is much harder for them To be fair its hard on everybody

@cvvhrn @futurebird @Dave_Goldsmith @raven667 @Npars01 Im not a fan of open ended strikes at all. My husb and i were both teachers in the UK. We had 3 young children so losing multiple days earnings in a teachers strike had massive knock-on for us. It's not sustainable for most workers.

@Godfrey642 @futurebird @Dave_Goldsmith @raven667 @Npars01 I hear you and we struggle as well but in my direct experience (2 strikes 2000 56 days and 2022 5 days) it works and like you my wife is a nurse at the same facility so we get hit x2

@cvvhrn @futurebird @Dave_Goldsmith @raven667 @Npars01 We used to alternate days... it wasn't ideal by *any* means and being a scab on the days in was v v hard. Not bringing in money wasn't an option either.

@Godfrey642 @cvvhrn @futurebird @raven667 @Npars01 Do you think the idea of a once a month general strike is Impractical or impossible? What about once a quarter?

@Dave_Goldsmith @Godfrey642 @cvvhrn @raven667 @Npars01 I think strikes should have a demand, something reasonable but significant and they should last until it is met (and maybe spread to additional unions if the demand isn't met.)

@Npars01 @Dave_Goldsmith @Godfrey642 @cvvhrn @raven667 This is a great list... for a party platform. For a strike demand you want something that sounds modest. ONE thing. A simple thing. A thing that requires no legal subterfuge. It's more important that the first demand is met to prove that the strike can work. Or that's how I think of this.

@futurebird I’ll call it a success when I see change as a result. Otherwise, feel-good exercises improve morale while oppression continues.
