@drgeraint asks:Q3. Is there a bit of road that you just hate cycling on?For me, a short stretch of southbound Mearns Rd at Mearns Kirk. Slight rise, poor surface, from Eaglesham Rd to the roundabout: https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=19/55.766735/-4.322718Just horrible for a fraction of a minute.Meanwhile, I just love Mearns Rd up by Hazelden, in either direction:https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=16/55.75285/-4.34769Related: https://road.cc/content/blog/do-you-have-bit-road-you-hate-316307#BikeNiteQ #BikeNite #BikeTooter #Cycling #MastoBikes cc @bikenite

@ascentale @drgeraint @bikenite A3: In the spirit of this question (from the road.cc link): Copperfield Road in Toronto's east end¹. It's a part of the official Waterfront Trail and most people would find it inoffensive or even nice (with nice wooded surroundings), but its combination of bad paving, dusty conditions, deceptively flat appearing slight uphill grade (when going west, my usual case), and doing it so many times just gets under my skin.¹ https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/7992949#map=15/43.76262/-79.16692

@drgeraint @bikenite A3. There are lots :( There's a section of Webster St. in Downtown Oakland that has painted bike lanes. But drivers park in the bike lanes all the time so they are not usable. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Webster+St,+California/@37.8116214,-122.2661635,17z/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x808f8753a909af45:0xaa4485d05257ade2!8m2!3d37.8139354!4d-122.264758!16s%2Fg%2F1tt0rc2t!5m1!1e3There are other terrible roads where it is scary to ride on because there is no dedicated space for cycling and because drivers go very fast. There are very nice new lanes in Berkeley by the University that have concrete protection and are nice and wide for riding together. https://youtube.com/shorts/Tssmr0tElOw#BikeNite

@ascentale @drgeraint @bikenite A3. One of the best things about my bike trip through the Netherlands was that I just felt safe and didn't have to constantly watch out for cars, always ready to brake and swerve to save my life. It's different here in Germany. We have some nice and safe bike paths, but since I don't have a car and do everything by bike, I'm out in city traffic a lot, which is less convenient.A bad example follows ...1/2#bikenite

@ascentale @drgeraint @bikenite A3. (2/2)Here is an extreme example from a bike tour near Cologne. This section was only about 2 km long, but it is pure horror. The country road is narrow and winding. Heavy trucks still drive at 80 km/h. When a cyclist comes around a bend, there is no time to brake. Guess who will survive!I will never ever ride this road again by bike!#bikenite

@ascentale @drgeraint @bikenite For me it's heading south on Whitefoord after crossing DeKalb Ave from Candler Park. There's a wicked steep hill and there's a stop sign at the steepest point right before you get to the top with constant car traffic so you nearly always need to stop, lose all of your momentum, and then try to start again on the hill. #bikenite

@ascentale @drgeraint @bikenite There are probably many I could mention, but this road I cycled once and will never do so again.Returning from a cycle tour of the Outer Hebrides in Scotland, we travelled across Skye. The A87 from Portree as far as the A851 was terrifying. Frequent cars, buses and lorries passing at high speed and very close. Local traffic as well as what may have been tourists.I was constantly on the lookout for someone who might have taken us and our bikes to our destination so we could get off the road. I was more than willing to pay. Sadly, I did not find anyone.I don't care how nice Skye might be (nothing to get excited about in my opinion), I will never go there again and I recommend the same to other cyclists. In 30 years of cycling I have never been so scared on a bike.#BikeNite #Cycling

@jfparis @FourT4 @DurableAce @ascentale @drgeraint @bikenite It's interesting to read your experience on #Skye. This summer we cycled the #Hebrides and while parts were lovely & roads quiet, there is a single main road through the islands and often we found it very busy with fast traffic, both locals & tourists. There was no alternative route & generally speaking, we found it the sort of road we would normally avoid. I doubt we will cycle the Hebrides again.

@geomannie @jfparis @FourT4 @ascentale @drgeraint @bikenite We cycled the length of the Outer Hebrides from south to north in late August 2016. We found the islands themselves fine, apart from one incident with a local on South Uist which the local police took up.It does seem that there is more awareness of the islands now and perhaps that has changed things.I have no plans to go back, although I would like to. Next time I would retrace my route back to Barra and then the ferry to Oban, or perhaps take the ferry to Ullapool, in the hope the route to Garve is better. From there take a train back to Oban.#BikeNite #Cycling

@ascentale @drgeraint @bikenite A3: Hm. Hm hm hm. Hm.Mostly I can avoid that shit, and avoiding that shit is the point of my map.BUTI am no fan of NE 175th, the main drag in Woodinville. Even with bike lanes, it is Not Fun and I spend as little time on it as I can get away with.#BikeNite

@moira @ascentale @drgeraint @bikenite How do you get to the place, where you can avoid that shit? Do you need to take a car?I don't just use my bike for recreation. When I'm on my bike, I'm just as much a part of traffic as everyone else in their cars. The main difference is that I constantly have to give way and shouldn't really be there at all.

@realSiegfried @ascentale @drgeraint @bikenite My bike is my primary form of transportation. I haven't cared about the price of gas... ages, since biking replaced transit rather than car. xDAs to how I avoid that shit, well, knowledge and map:https://github.com/solarbirdy/NorthshoreBikeMap/(I make these maps)But also making non-car-dependence a requirement about where I live.

@moira @ascentale @drgeraint @bikenite The map project is impressive!"Making non-car dependence a requirement" sounds very challenging in a world of car-brains. I really appreciate any effort. Don't give up!

@realSiegfried @ascentale @drgeraint @bikenite Not as much here. As North America goes, well - you can see the map. We've done a lot of work. There's a lot more to do, but we've done a lot of work, and more is being done _now_.
