Looking for #OpenSource #bloxel (Minecraft-like #voxel) games and engines to either take inspiration from or perhaps even contribute to. Please boost / reply.#FOSS #GameDev

If you’re wondering what the heck I mean by #bloxel, it’s a term I think I came up with, combining “block” and “voxel”. I like to differentiate between Minecraft “grid-based but not entirely made of cubes” worlds (since there’s things like stairs, slabs and fences), and a more “proper” voxel game like Teardown or Veloren (FOSS) since the aesthetics and technology behind it are typically pretty different.

@mezzodrinker Yeah I’ve played and even briefly modded NodeCore. I’m glad it exists, but it’s not for me. Lua as a scripting language is imho a bad choice. You’re limited to what you can do with the engine and server-side scripting.Considering it’s been around for 15 years and it has not come out with anything that could excite me, I feel like it’s lacking the potential I’m looking for.

Something I came across recently that re-ignited my interest was this game called Cubyz that recently released its version 0.0.0. It started out being written in Java but went through a rewrite in Zig. I like that it already has distant chunk rendering (using LOD) and infinite terrain in all 3 dimensions.Gonna just drop the release video here: https://youtu.be/jm_0nRQEn_o

@copygirl I think Luanti (previously known as Minetest) is the most relevant FOSS engine for this kind of games, dunno if there is anything else major enough

Through asking around in Bevy’s Discord, someone (well, a developer) told me about Riverbed. A #bloxel game built with #Bevy, and thus written in #Rust. It has less gameplay than Cubyz but an equally interesting foundation to build a proper game on top.

@friz64 That’s really cool. Admittedly I use “voxel” to refer to this type of engine, similar to when people talk about “voxel art”, and prefer to use “bloxel” to refer to Minecraft-like engines where each block can have a unique shape. So it’s not what I’m personally looking for. Though pure voxels may still be useful for distant LODs.

@copygirl I just very much respect the author, and think it's good work that one can learn a lot from
