people need to stop writing software like hardware is limitless. that goes triple for game devs.

like, your product becomes:- more unstable- less accessible- more expensive to run- ecologically disruptivefor why? to save a little effort in optimisation?but who cares because the user supposedly doesn’t know any better to complain. chances are they’ll blame:- their “old” computer/phone (bought 2yrs ago)- their “wifi“- their browser (fair tbh)- themselvesbut not your sloppy software

I’m trying not to say “quality software is a moral choice and the people making sloppy software are amoral” butwhoops

and I’ve been there, I’ve written sloppy code when the pressures of employment were greater than my moral drive and that sucks and that’s life when life depends on capital demands.I (regretfully) shouldered that burden as a personal failure, “a better programmer would have written better code in my position” - that dealt a lot of psychic damage. but even the best programmer has a breaking point.

I never want to be in that position again, and we shouldn’t accept it as inevitable even if the world we live in insists it must be.

@bogwise@mastodon.gamedev.placeYesterday I've been browsing Fedi from my build machine — at times it got so overtaxed that even the mouse cursor stopped responding. I think web developers should do this more often.Held at gunpoint of course. And not being allowed to use their phone while the system is "busy" 😈

@m0xEE or even just, low bandwidth, lossy networks, high ping. "real world conditions"call it what it is: fragile software(err, maybe that's not enough of a deterrent... https://fragilesoft.com/ 🙃)
