When I was in highschool and had considerably more fuckaround time, I installed some flavor of a Red Hat linux distribution onto my PC. It was ok, but never great, had almost no compatibility with hardware I had around, and eventually I went back to Windows (XP probably…). What I’m saying is, “just switch to linux” might make sense now, but as a far more tech savvy teen it certainly wasn’t easier than Windows. Granted, Windows wasn’t 24/7 nonstop fuckery then, but still…

I have a sweet old Dell gaming laptop that can’t go to Win 11, so I guess I’ll dive back in lol. Won’t make it any more useless, that’s for sure.

@mcnado I've been using Linux since 2003-04 and it's been my daily driver since 2006. Desktop #Linux has come a loooooong way since your first experience two decades ago.Unless you have specific software which requires #Windows or #MacOS, especially considering the security issues and privacy violations, there is little reason to use them.

@peteorrall Even IF they use software that's Windows only, much can be resolved by using either Wine or a Windows VM.

@phoenixgee Speaking of which, I wonder if you can run Windows 11 in a VM on hardware that it won't otherwise run on?@peteorrall

@argv_minus_one Interesting question; probably, as long as the VM supports it.But why would anyone do that?I mean yeah, it's possible, and while we wonder if we could, we must not forget to wonder whether we should.@peteorrall

@phoenixgee So that you can still run software that only works on Windows 11 and not Wine, I guess.Unfortunately that wouldn't help me. I have software that only works on Windows 10 and not Wine or Windows 11. 🤦‍♂️@peteorrall

@argv_minus_one Yeah, so do i (#musicproduction equipment), but that's why i run a small (8GB) win10 VM. Starts automatically as a service on boot, no manual interaction necessary...And frankly, if a software starts having Win11 as *requirement*, i'm modifying my own requirement for that software.@peteorrall
