Under some circumstances, the person who kicks out another effectively exiles himself. This is basically what he GOP is doing. A party can't kick out every voice that doesn't toe the line. Here's why you don't see it on the left: because it's more of a coalition than a party per se. It has a lot of voices and promises each that it's the most important to keep the coalition together. Kicking out a voice is a threat to all others and could cause the party to split.
