       @PaulaMaddox My favorite horrible chip, the sp0256! I have a machine that speaks phone speech stored on paper tape, they're s good match, a lot data rate.  I have some text to phoneme conversion code written by some guys in the navy, in the 70s. Recursive lookup tables. I extended them, it nearly made me mad. River, driver, driven, racer, racer, rise, risen... The almost-patterned rules of spoken print English! You can describe long or short vowels in words like river and driver using bezier curves. The 3rd consonant bends the first vowel.  It's like trying to puzzle out a crazy conspiracy theory.
