Wow - #SodiumIonBatteries half the price, 5x the lifespan, performs better from -100C to +70C, and has a higher energy density than LithiumIon & LithiumFP chemistries, with entirely common materials. Also, the manufacturing can use existing battery production lines with minimal retooling. https://yewtu.be/watch?v=eB_vfKA85po or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eB_vfKA85po This changes the equations of pretty much everything.

@lightweight they've been promised for years now, while I agree there's a lot of promise and the evidence looks concrete... Like all things battery tech, I believe it when I can buy it in my devices.

@lightweight That Invidious instance never works for me. I can browse around, but the video page itself doesn't load probably. Network response says 500 and the renedered page says "Error while communicating with Invidious companion: Unexpected char '<' at line 1, column 1" which is often when the server responds with HTML when the client is expecting JSON.

@aim As I understand it, the latest MG4 (We've got a '23 MG4) currently ships with an Na battery...

@mez indeed - I don't always check that the Invidious instance is working - I mostly offer the alternative link to deprecate surveillance capitalism... 😅 - but yeah, also I think YT is keen to break Invidious, so it changes up its API from time to time to derail it.

@lightweight Ah yah, I guess their API would underlie it. And I think I had Peertube in my head when clicking the link, not Invidius. One of the (slightly) newer instances works, so maybe it's just a version thing.

@aim looks like I misremembered: https://projectblue.com/blue/opinion-pieces/1282/saic-launches-its-first-lmo-semi-solid-state-battery the MG4 will have a 'semi-solid-state' battery rather than a sodium ion battery chemistry.

@lightweight still a step forward in safety and low temp performance. But not quite the chemical leap yet. Iterative improvement is what I mostly expect anyway. The first lithium batteries were pretty poor and very expensive. I expect the same or similar journey from any new chemical battery.
