I’m looking through my Macintosh user guide (the booklet that accompanied my 1984 Macintosh) for the first time in a while, and I’m a little obsessed with this graphic explaining scrolling.

@superbetsy Oh yes! First-generation descriptions, (many earlier than this) explaining for the first or -ish time totally new concepts, often delight in being superbly clear and succinct. 40s and 50s description of type of subroutines is on that edge. One example is of "two types" of subroutines, online and some word I've forgot for the kind that we use now; the "inline" subroutine baffled me until I reinternalized how code was often literally strung together on paper tape or in card decks. In- line is literally multiple copies spliced in where needed. The other kind needed a Wheeler Jump or other complexity to reuse. But there are great succinct descriptions of fundamentals, like that apple scroll, that are just so great to see.

@superbetsy then there's does the view port move? Or the document? And how did apple decide the change the basic metaphor suddenly?
