If you're looking for a recommendation on how to vote in the upcoming #NixOS SC (steering committee) election this guide looks pretty solid.> The candidates are sorted by their willingness to making the NixOS community a safe and welcoming environment for people of all identities, and their ability to standing up for those values when attacked.https://rentry.co/nixos-sc-election-guide-2025#nix #nixpkgs

@hexa@chaos.social And which one of these candidates actually cares about important issues like software freedom?

@SuperDicqMany of them do. This year there isn't as much emphasis on that because of the recent issues with the committee and external influences, but you can still find some info:https://github.com/NixOS/SC-election-2025/issues/338https://github.com/NixOS/SC-election-2025/issues/326And a lot more from last year (some candidates are the same):https://github.com/NixOS/SC-election-2024/issues/28https://github.com/NixOS/SC-election-2024/issues/18https://github.com/NixOS/SC-election-2024/issues/120@hexa

@fgaz@fe.disroot.org @hexa@chaos.social Very interesting. If I was more involved with NixOS I would definitely vote for a candidate that would move away from GitHub and most seem to support that. But I'm also reading a lot of the things that made me shy away from NixOS in the first place like: We should make it easy for users to opt-out of proprietary softwareWhat about opt-in instead?

@SuperDicq @hexa @fgaz How about don't attack the users with proprietary malware at all?

@Suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com @hexa@chaos.social @fgaz@fe.disroot.org I am personally of the opinion that clear separation between free and nonfree combined with no nonfree stuff being added by default is not perfect, but acceptable. A few proprietary packages are often a necessary evil to get people who are new to the free world to start climbing that freedom ladder.I am fine with the way GNU Guix is packaged. I was also fine with how Debian used to be packaged, before version 12 started including non-free-firmware by default on the installation images. For NixOS I would recommend that they do the same. Move the proprietary packages to a separate "channel" as they are called on Nix. And make Linux-Libre the default kernel.

@SuperDicq The use unfree software is opt-in in nixpkgs and that is unlikely to change.Migrating away from GitHub is desirable, but it is not super clear what (selfhostable) platform can sustain the number of interactions that nixpkgs produces. The cost will be significant, I remember the calculation that freedesktop.org made.@fgaz

@hexa@chaos.social @fgaz@fe.disroot.org The use unfree software is opt-in in nixpkgs and that is unlikely to change. The fact that allowUnfree in Nix is disabled by default is a good thing, but this config setting doesn't do what I'd expect it to do.This setting only applies to user packages, NixOS still installs itself with proprietary drivers and kernel modules by default (this is not opt-in).

@hexa @SuperDicq @fgaz yep, going away from GitHub would require having lots of sponsoring money and every time someone bigger would pull out, the entire thing would be at risk. Also, if you migrate you would probably lose some of the contributors.

@sandro@c3d2.social @hexa@chaos.social @fgaz@fe.disroot.org Also people might not like it if I bring this up, but Git technically doesn't even need hosting. It was originally designed to work decentralized via email.

@SuperDicq @hexa @fgaz true, but you have no review or CI in that. Also speaking for myself: I have probably send less than a handful of patches via mail in the last 10 years. I don't like the workflow and many drive by corrections I have done on GitHub would have not happened over email.I would even go as far that I might have never become a contributor on nixpkgs if it would be email based.

@sandro@c3d2.social @hexa@chaos.social @fgaz@fe.disroot.org I agree. It is definitely less convenient than having a centralized server where you can review code together and stuff and like that. But if hosting such a thing is impossible I would personally still choose inconvenience over using Microsoft GitHub.

@SuperDicq @hexa @fgaz also you wouldn't want to be on the receiving side of my send mails: 3 new mails in 5 minutes because I figured out CI found something or it doesn't truly work, yet.

@SuperDicq @hexa I mean these are the candidates who care the most about freedom in general, so you can definitely extrapolate.
