Of what use is #DigitalSovereignty when you need an Apple or Android device to install the App that implements your Digitally Sovereign solution? Always make sure there is a way for citizens to use your solution without being forced to share data with Apple or Google.

@jwildeboer i fully agree but there is in the short term no practical alternative i am afraid, besides for a very small niche of principled, tech aware people (with rooted phones etc), Android and iOS will remain the dominant platforms. So meanwhile we have to make use of apps on those platforms as good as possible with regard to data sharing with those big tech companies, appy regulatory pressure etc. Digital sovereignty is not binary.

@ErikJonker Just make sure there is a device independent method to work with a solution. As a web service, for example, in addition to apps. It's by the way not just about principled people, there's also a huge amount of people that simply cannot afford to have modern (enough) Apple or Android devices and a working mobile contract.

@jwildeboer ...the last point i disagree with, the very last thing people give up in poverity, difficult situations etc. is their smartphone, you can see this all the time with refugees, migrants, in Gaza, poor people in Africa etc. With all it's problems, the smartphone platform has changed the world in that respect.

@ErikJonker The point isn't to have or not to have a mobile device. The point is the ecosystem of Android and Apple devices that give two manufacturers close to monopolistic power on data access and use. Which is kind of the opposite of the principle of digital sovereignty. Also: I said "modern enough" for a reason. Some solutions need a feature that only the newer/newest generation of mobile devices offers (NFC, Secure Enclave, encrypted storage, Bluetooth > 4.x etc).

@jwildeboer @ErikJonker I think it's time for EU to start supporting an open source phone project and push at least government and bank apps at very least to it. I mean that time was yesterday.
