@ClareBear , if we're able to keep banking online reasonably safe you'd think we should be able to do so with voting (saving on paper, petrol to get to vote, etc).Incentive to vote could be a $50 ? rate reduction for the year.

@Antigrav @ClareBear in case you haven't seen it, after years of pushing back at this flawed logic, I've created this handy explainer for why online voting continues to be a horrible idea: https://davelane.nz/online-voting-continues-be-very-bad-idea-2025-and-beyond

@lightweight @Antigrav @ClareBear tautoko! Online voting is just this bad idea that keeps coming back.

@va2lam @Antigrav @ClareBear yup, the ongoing reckons of uninformed people being promoted by an irresponsible media. The media needs to have a proper, in depth journalistic investigation of the whole thing, with all the nuances explored and a comprehensive response prepared. To date, this is a journalistic failure.

@lightweight @Antigrav @ClareBear haven't really seen one in any country that I follow, alas, though maybe it happened in Germany if there is that court declaration that you mentioned?

@va2lam @Antigrav @ClareBear yes, it's a concept that should be put down indefinitely, because it's not a technological issue. It's a humanity issue, which isn't going to change unless the current trends towards fascism/authoritarianism are allowed to continue.

@lightweight @va2lam @ClareBear , we still could make it a $50 grocery voucher to boost voting?

@Antigrav @va2lam @ClareBear sure, that's valid approach, although sadly it won't likely lead to more informed voters. Here in Ōtautahi, a few of my neighbours approached me and said, 'hey, you're politically engaged and your politics seem to align with mine... whom should I vote for?' It was kind a nice of them to ask, but these were fairly well-off people. I think the problem is that people just don't think their local representation makes any real difference, due to past empty promise.

@lightweight @Antigrav @ClareBear with an extrinsic incentive, perhaps more people will vote, and likely some of them will try to be informed. But it is true that it's not that easy to find out about the candidates beyond the short blurb. I did do some research, and Wellington is easier than other places.

@Antigrav @va2lam @ClareBear i think we need different ways for candidates to engage with the voting public. There was zero useful differentiation between candidates based on their voter guide statements. All insight came from a few (un)informed voters' reckons about what was motivating various candidates to run. Some were on the money, othersr culture-war enflaming, or flat out slander.

@lightweight @Antigrav @ClareBear I enjoyed the Bird of the Year videos. The council candidate videos, not so much.

@va2lam @Antigrav @ClareBear there needs to be a lot more uncompromised funding, e.g. from some public-interest pool of journalism funding, for investigative public interest reporting. Stuff that identifies past affiliations of candidates, explores vested interests, and identifies policy positions and promises, and assesses the potential tractability of actually fulfilling those promises.

@va2lam @lightweight @Antigrav @ClareBear Imo, the first change that should be made to local government elections is having them run by the Electoral Commission rather than private entities.

@va2lam @jeremy_pm @Antigrav @ClareBear seems to me that this (and perhaps successive) Gov'ts don't want to improve local gov't despite their insistence that they do. Sort of like how they 'hate' taking no debt, except that, rather than tax wealthy people, they'd rather let them borrow gov't bonds, which, unlike tax, incur interest, and get paid back, eventually. 🤔

@va2lam @lightweight @Antigrav @ClareBear Although being online, the BOTY elections does risk foreign interference as was evident by the success of the Pūteketeke campaign in the Bird of the Century election.

@jeremy_pm @va2lam @Antigrav @ClareBear also, the actual $$ at stake from the results of the election are relatively negligible. Unlike even local elections.

@lightweight @va2lam @Antigrav @ClareBear This current govt, in particular, is all over the place with its policies and power struggle with local governments. Seems central govt is unwilling to cede authority but doesn’t want responsibility for poor outcomes.
