@futurebird Wait, is there an argument about NYC not being part of New England? What's the rationale?!

@lffontenelle @futurebird Geographically, New England is made of 6 states, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.Traditionally, New York marks the northern most state in the Mid-Atlantic region of the east coast with West Virginia at it's southern end.Since NYC is, sorta by definition, in the state of New York, it isn't in New England. If New England is a state of mind and not a geographical region, then sure. Why not? 🤪

@lffontenelle @nlowell Ok Virginia being “new england” is just too much — even for me.

@futurebird @lffontenelle @nlowellNo, it’s not.Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island. The first four were all Massachusetts Bay Colony originally, then broke up because that’s a huge administrative area in the 18th c.Rhode Island was formed by religious refugees from Massachusetts (never believe anyone who tells you Puritans were about “religious freedom”)Connecticut is the rich, boring cousin who you have to admit is technically family.

@futurebird @lffontenelleOf those choices, it’s because it was Dutch, yeah. Completely separate colonial history. Huge Native cultural overlap between Iroquois Confederacy and the mutually intelligible languages to the east, but never let it be said that colonial projects aren’t happy drawing lines wherever through whoever’s families, tribes, clans, rivalries, and trade routes.

@futurebird I always consider upstate to be New Englandy (it *feels* like New England) but not NYC, no. Afaik though, no part of NY is traditionally New England. I don't know who decides these things, so maybe ymmv.
