Brazilian authorities save a Jaguar with gunshot wounds from drowning in river.On October 1st the Amazonas Military Police found a wounded Jag struggling in the waters of the Rio Negro. The officials made a makeshift floating device and tossed it to the big cat. The jaguar, normally an extremely skittish creature, swarm towards the boat and clung to the flotation for dear life, clearly exhausted from it's gunshot wounds and long swim.The Federal University of Amazonas and the State Secretariat for Animal Protection were on standby to stabilize the cat for transport to rehab. Vets confirmed that the Jag had multiple gunshot wounds as well as fragments of bullets under the skin. They also noted the big cat had several broken teeth.I have heard that the jag is doing well and expected to make a full recovery, but this has not been confirmed

@Tepid_Tapir everyone should read "Man-Eaters of Kumaon a 1944 book written by hunter-naturalist Jim Corbett" it is mainly about tigers, but some leopards, and is set in India, but a common theme in the book, is that the big cats get an injury (like broken teeth) and then become man eaters, because they can no longer survive or catch their normal prey... once they learn to eat people they never go back to harder to catch prey... anyway it makes me wonder if this cat was terrorizing a village and that is why it has been shot???

@davesbit So a bit more info came out today, pic related is a close up of the jag.It seems like he was shot with a rifle, not releasing any more info on that probably due to investigation. More than 30 pellets hitting the face, which vets believe line up with the broken teeth. In other words, they believe the gun shots caused eventual broken teeth. It also had oedema (fluid retention usually as a result of physical trauma) in its eyes and ears. They are not yet releasing the sex of the animal.So I don't think damaged teeth play a role since the teeth appeared to be damaged after this altercation. I do wonder though how someone was able to unload 30 bullets into a big cat. I'm not ruling out a man eater but I have some other ideas too like trapping.

@Tepid_Tapir 30 "pellets" sounds like a shotgun, with small shot tt or smaller shot, unless it was multiple shotgun hits? small pellet shotgun hits would not break teeth... thirty rifle rounds would kill it no matter where it was hit

@davesbit I'm only reporting what I'm hearing. I keep seeing rifle, but some sources are saying pellets and others bullets. I've also not seen any X-rays released yet.
