I've never met anyone who gets really uppity about their shell configuration that actually does real work with it. Its always "ricing" and neofetch/fastfetch wankers. And maybe Nix users. People who actually touch keyboard for a living just use bash. Feel free to anecdote me, just my experience.

@prettygood eh fair . ive moved to zsh because idk it has two plugins i rlly like for vi mode and syntax highlighting . but i dont rlly do “ricing” or any of that , idont use any “package managers” (weird concept ina shell) . i just sort of dislike bash , its defaults , and its weird builtin behaviours

@hakui @prettygood I don't go ricing - I just have a shared configuration and then neofetch to make it easier to remember which computer I'm on.

@Suiseiseki @eric @prettygood >Tab complete works fine and doesn't mess up the current terminal output. It doesn't in bash. It only gives you the all possible options for tab complete while you have to type the differences out until there's only one option. Only then it auto-completes it completely. At first it seems weird, but once you get used to it, it's impossible to get rid of it. Just like remapping Caps Lock to Escape.

@tidest I would post my PS1 but its full of aliased color code references, but looks like this. Just the time, hostname, and path. I use the hostname in there because I can be logged into a half dozen things at once and it prevents dumb mistakes at least once in a while. Plus I always use short hostnames so its not a big clutter.

@prettygood You might be mixing “uppity” with “parading their shit around”. I definitely want (not need) my shell to look/feel/behave a certain way but that’s one way, not /the/ way. I wager it’s those who are terminally (no pun intended) in argumentation mode you’re seeing, simply because they’re the loudest. Pretty much everyone I’ve ever worked with has had a modified terminal, maybe only lightly.Or maybe not; the best developers (not sysadmins) I’ve worked with, coincidentally, have had no modifications at all.

@speckledlemon I wrote a basic bashrc like 10 years ago and I've maybe added a couple of functions to it over the past few years, an alias here and there, and just run with it on every machine forever.

@prettygood I'm with you. I don't touch my shells anymore. If I'm logging into 100 different systems, I don't have time to configure shells on every single one of them. Better to just keep it default and work with it.Except for ksh. Fuck ksh.

@prettygood yeah bash is the default on slackware so I use that. there's an obvious correlation that all the lusers I know who use thier computer for real work are on slackware. It's a no brainerI treat my computer like a workhorse. it's foremost a tool, and if it doesn't do what I want then I beat it into submission. You don't see carpenters worshipping mallets and chiselsThe shell is also just a really shitty interface. I'd rather use emacs

@prettygood I occasionally get mad at people at work who used AI to write a zsh program that uses some fancy feature not available in standard bash, and it breaks when I need it to run in a docker container. It's really my fault for letting it into the repo though :(
