You're free to not use it, but you could be happy that some people are at least trying to break the duopoly. Also, calling does work for a bunch of devices. @coolbean @gryzor @fdroidorg @don_atoms @bart If that's a old-style phone - the OS is running on the phone companies computer (it's usually asterisk, or a proprietary version of asterisk).If the phone has a screen, it's either running a single function software, or a proprietary OS.

@snacks @gryzor @fdroidorg @don_atoms @coolbean @bart Unfortunately, there is no DSL or cable modem that runs free software - as something as well knows as modulation and demodulation much be kept proprietary.Most GNUbootable ThinkPads do have a RJ-11 port and I reckon with the correct software setup you could plug in a handset and use that (or just use the mic port).The internal card is meant to work as a sound card that produces -48V encodings of the sound (i.e. for dial-up), but I couldn't seem to get such sound card working with limited trying.
