The only fix to IMSI catchers/Stingray tracking of your cell phone is to not have your phone with you anywhere you don't want to be tracked. (or truly, get a burner phone you never turn on at home and paid cash for... very difficult to do).

@ai6yr I have been thinking lately that the stingray thing isn't all that important anymore because the Telcos that run the real towers will simply hand over any data they're asked for. Why bother with a finicky stingray when the entire network is a purpose built system for wide area surveillance?

@ai6yr A burner you bought with cash, and your regular phone wasn't with you, and you managed to defeat the RFID tags in your clothes and whatever non-car transportation you used to get there. In a disguise.

So let's say you want to protest (1st Amendment right, so far) in my town. The typical protest zone is the corner of Lynn Road and West Hillcrest Drive. Outlined in red in the diagram below. If you drive there (getting off from the 101N to Lynn Road), you are now logged. If you drive from Lynn Road and park in the Oaks Parking lot, your data is with Flock. If you drive on West Hillcrest Drive from either direction... your license plate is logged. https://deflock.me/map#map=17/34.185372/-118.892509

Say, "well, I'll park over at Janss marketplace" LOGGED six ways until Sunday, taking the Moorpark Road entrance or coming in through Moorpark Road or West Wilbur.

Ah! I'm clever you say, I'll take Janss Road. LOGGED, probably an image of you in their computer, too.. Ventu Park Road? LOGGED.

There's no route to the protest site in our town without getting your license plate automatically read and logged at least once as entering the zone. Your only saving grace: it's a lot of people going into the zone to the mall... but if a Federal agency wanted to dragnet EVERY car that went near or past that protest site... guess what? They got you. Maybe not even a subpoena required in most states, just $$$ paid to Flock. #privacy

@darkuncle Walk or bike is the safest, no cell phone. Cell phone with data off might be okay, but I am unsure if "off" is truly off in all cases.

@darkuncle Although... being at a protest is not against the law. Just making the observation that there are a lot of tools out there that we have deployed "for crime" or whatever that is essentially blanket surveillance. (Edit: or, park elsewhere and take a bus ride in)

@ai6yr @darkuncle A family member took the bus to a protest in DC in the '80s. The FBI was there with an SLR taking pictures of everyone as they disembarked.

@darkuncle @alrs @ai6yr There’s a big difference there. If I have your photo, I have to walk around door to door asking people “do you know this guy?” Or publish it in the paper and hope someone turns them in. If I have your phone’s unique identification…

@ai6yr Put it on airplane mode. Go stand somewhere boring to turn it on and check for messages etc. Then you can still take photos and look at maps etc.
