This morning I ran 5km! Outside, with hills, non-stop. My first 5k in a long long time, my first ever where I felt I could keep going afterwards.The shoes I bought at the start of this running journey have officially worn through, but they got me to that 5km.

To give some context to this post: Back in 2018 I had some health issues related to loss of blood, followed by severe anemia - at the worse point I could barely walk and that basically reset my fitness to zero. It sucked.It took many years (and obviously other events happened), but last July I decided to start running again; Back then, a few hundred metres were a struggle.And I've been steadily building up from there (minus a fall and related rib injury).And today, I ran 5km. Fuck yes.

This morning was a challenge run morning and I cut 3:25 off my (~5.3k) run time!Definitely in that period where gains are coming in fast. Form is improving etc.(It also definitely helped that it was a good few degrees cooler today)

Took another 1 minute 46 seconds off my run this morning. The weather was on my side, and was aiming to take off about a minute more (~2:44 target) but my first ~1.3k was 30 seconds over my already ambitious target pace, and then I spent the rest of the running attempting to actively recover from that.Very happy, but can definitely do better.

Easy/long run this morning, was incredibly happy with my pacing - hit every lap on pace, except the last one which I finished out 45 seconds faster.

This morning I was just happy I finished the run. A little over a minute slower than my previous PB, went off way too fast - somehow faster than last Wednesday. Need to learn not to do that. The 3-4km was very difficult, and getting through that was mostly psychological. Finished strong on the last 1.3km though; looking forward to checking out a longer, flatter run later this week.

Accidentally ran 10km this morning. I've never been fit enough to accidentally run 10km before...(The path is newer and marked as "about 4km" but where the path begins and ends, and occasionally goes is still a little under specified...so there and back came out to 10km instead of the ~8km planned)It was an easy/long run day and I ran it at pace, ecstatically happy.

The ambiguity is because the circuit we run is somewhere between 1.25km and 1.4km depending on the exact grade of the hills, and so the total run we do (4 laps) is between 5.3km and 5.5km - so working out any gains more granular than 10s of seconds is not possible.Either way, PB!

This morning I ran 5km of alternating slow/fast/slow/fast intervals, followed by a 5km cool down run.The fast intervals were fast, between 4% and 12% faster than my current 5km pace. Mostly today was about proving to myself that I can run that fast for significant periods and still have energy to run at my easy-run pace more-or-less indefinitely afterwards.Feeling good.

Well I think those intervals helped because this morning I took 1 minute and 4 seconds off my fast run PB!The roads were wet and I didn't have the best traction, which made things more tricky, so very happy.

Managed to get outside to run for the first time in over a week - I skipped one day as I felt I had over pushed on the previous two runs, and then we were hit with multiple days of really terrible running weather.Took the time to kickstart a strength conditioning plan. Which my muscles are now feeling.Today was a short-easy 5km, took it very easy.

Fast run today, finished 99 seconds slower than my current PB. Annoying because the conditions were really good, and I was on target pace the first 20 minutes, but I was clearly under-fuelled and just did not have the drive in my muscles to keep up that pace.Still way faster than I was 2 months ago. And something to consider going forward.

I was feeling really good this morning, but ended up cuting short my fast run today at ~3.9km out of a planned 5.3km. Just had nothing left to give.Going to chalk it up to some combination of 1) still recovering from Saturday's 11km long run and 2) the air quality not being great - we probably would have postponed had we thought to check it before hand, but it didn't become obvious until we set out.You just have to show up and do what you can.

Another DNF today at ~4.5km / 5.3kmFirst lap my pace was right on target, a little slow going into lap 3, and then just struggle.Some combination of the heat, the humidity, the air quality and my nutrition is kicking my ass this week.

Much better run today.Weather was cooler/less humid.Deliberately set of at a pace that was half way between my target and my easy run pace, because after the last two runs I mentally needed to finish one.First two laps were harder than expected, but overall fine. Then the wind shifted and I felt ridiculously better, I actually felt fit again. Gonna put the blame on air quality.Finished out the last lap 18 seconds faster than pace, could have been faster, but didn't want to push it.

Fast run today, a run of two halves. First two laps+ (~3km) were great, fast, hitting the target, I was feeling pretty good.Then had a series of environmental challenges (car traffic, a runaway dog, loose gravel) and for a moment let the part of my brain that really wanted to give up take control. Wasn't out of breath, wasn't tired, but ended up stopping and walking for 2 minutes.Picked up the pace again, finished out the last lap and 3/4 about a minute behind my PB, 3 minutes under target.

Very happy with my 5.3km fast run today.Decided to try something different, deliberately ran consistently under my target pace for 75% of the run, and the ran a very fast final lap on semi-tired legs.This inverted the problem I'm currently having with my first 2 laps being too fast.Missed my PB by 18 seconds, which makes today my second fastest time; and I'm fairly confident I can do better now.

Lots of rain this week, managed to get out for a run Monday and today (Friday).Ground was wet both times, and my shoes just do not have good traction on the surfaces around here...which makes it feel much harder to run at the paces I can when it is dry.Did ~6km easy run on monday before being rained out, and finished a 5.3km fast run today ~1 minute slower than my PB.Not great, but not terrible. Probably time to start planning more treadmill sessions.
